Running (Road) warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Noosa Tri-9

Getting the head and body ready for todays Sprint Quali
10 AM

Orienteering ◪ race (EOC Sprint Quali) 15:21 [5] 4.2 km (3:39 / km) +100m 3:16 / km
spiked:18/20c shoes: Asics Gel Noosa Tri-9

Straight line distance: 2.7km
Optimum route distance: 3.8km (So my 4.2km is a rough guess)

Started with a Latvian guy who was jumping around the place and puffing out his cheeks and a Finn aswell. Bit slow to the first control, i had the really close one to the start and went around the building, maybe 5sec dropped already here. Up the hill to 2 and then kept my height and went around the back of the buildings on the paths to get 3. Out to the North of 3 and down the steps and hill to attack 4 from below. Got to the control and there was a wall between me and it, quick stop to check, no wall on the map so hopped over and punched it. Then up the steps and went around the buildings to the East instead of through the gap. Down the 71step spiral staircase and downhill to 6, as i got back onto the main downhill i was with the Latvian and Finn again. Second exit off the road and got 6 no problems. Then around the buildings and up to 7. 8,9,10 were all clean aswell and was navigating as fast as i was running. The hill up to 11 hurt in a big way but chugged away up it. 12,13 were good aswell and no issues. Lost maybe 10/15sec to 14 as i came up the path to where the control was but couldnt see it with cars and thought i was in the area to the South so turned, then realised and got back on track. Ran hard to 15 and the uncrossable wall before it was actually a fence. 16,17,18,19 all good and clean. Just coming down the steps from 19 i saw my Finn who was hammering it to the finish and i wasnt hanging around either. He got the last before me and i missed the punch. Crossed the line and the pumped up Latvian came in behind us.

Results up and they look pretty good from my point of view. Didnt qualify for the final but was in a really fast heat by the looks of it. The last guy to qualify for my heat would have won either of the other 2 heats. Not sure why there is such a difference seeing as all course were roughly the same length and climb. One of my better sprint races by all accounts and also perfomed on a big ocassion. B final tomorrow morning to have another shot and see how it goes.

Orienteering ◪ race (EOC Long Quali) 1:28:23 [5] **** 15.0 km (5:54 / km) +280m 5:23 / km
spiked:20/23c shoes: Inov-8 Talon 212 (2)

Straight Line: 11.2km, 280m climb (No GPS so rough guess of distance)

After a good first day it was time for some fun on the long distance stuff. Having run on the model map previously with nick i can safely say it was no use whatsoever in the scheme of things as the terrains were quite different in my eyes. Also different mapper for model and actual race.

Started with a Belgian and Russian. They tore off at the start and as i spiked number 1 and turned to come out of it i saw the russian coming in towards me having followed the Belgian the wrong way. Went pretty straight line to 2 and then dropped into the open for 3 partially for ease of entry to the control and also to see what that stuff looked like for later in the course. Caught a glimpse of the red jersey of Russia leaving it as i was coming in. Next came the long leg to 4, thought what are my strengths (running), so went the longer but simpler track route, probably in hindsight could have cut parts of this off but didnt see them at the time, then through some small paths to get to near four and got to it to see Tove coming in like a steam train after me. It proved to be smart to avoid the green as this is what proved to be the undo-ing of conor on the day as he decided to fight it, the green won that battle. Guessed Tove was going my way for number 5 so stuck with her, dropped a bit low, fell in a hole, then relocated and into the control. Took the path route to 6 running around instead of through the terrain and got it cleanly. For 7 i went back along some of the paths I used to get to 4 and then got the control fine. 8 was where i made another mistake, got confused with all the fire breaks as to where i was, maybe lost 90sec/2minutes here for not sticking on my bearing and being confident on it. Along the same track i used for 3-4 in order to get to 9 which i hit cleanly, passed conor on the way coming towards me early in his course. 10,11, 12 i was hesitant with the green patches but was clean and had no issue finding the kites which were where i expect them to be (unlike on ocassions). On route to 13 i took on some water and some gel on route and got this clean, same with 14 and 15. Was thinking about 17 on route to 16 and headed off bearing to 16, missed it, relocated and lost mayb 1minute here aswell on a short and pretty easy leg because i lost focus. Took the round route to 17 on the road instead of the up and down through the green option, i think the smart choice. 18 and 19 were clean aswell. Lost maybe 1minute/70sec to 20 though as was hesitant, hit the wrong control, then overshot a bit and had to come back, silly at the late stage in the race to bin time like this. 21,22,23 were all clean at the back end.

Tough demanding course both technically in picking and executing your route choices and physically. No sun beating down but still very humid and was sweating and breathing heavy after the run to the start area.

Running (Trails) warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

Guessed warm up distance. Includes warm up, drills and run to start aswell

Orienteering ◪ race (EOC Middle Quali) 36:29 [5] *** 6.5 km (5:37 / km) +160m 5:00 / km
spiked:18/21c shoes: Inov-8 Talon 212 (2)

Straight Line: 5.8km, 145m climb (No GPS so rough guess of distance)

First time running an EOC and standing next to Ralph and Baptiste in the start boxes was not a bad way to begin. Big guys, maybe i need to eat more! Started and took the first one nice and handy as the guys raced away ahead. Got the first solid and even though i drifted a bit to 2 in the rough stuff i was still in control and knew where i was and had a good mental image. 3 and 4 were easy enough. Drifted a bit going to 5 and came out south of the control, stopped for a few seconds and headed north, found it. 6 was potentially tricky so i went over the hill top so i knew where i was for the attack, got pushed in the green and hit the track, kept going with the head up, spotted the hill and there was the kite. Did lose maybe 1minute at this control being silly. 7 was clean and was behind Ralph. 8,9,10,11 all clean. maybe not the best route to 12 but hit it fine and then down to 13. 14 (apparently in the wrong place) i saw people running to and the tapes going from it so checked the code, yep its mine, punched it and worked away again. 15, the spectator i made an error in front of everyone and lost mayb 45sec or so. silly mistake. 16,17,18 was in a bunch so tried to hang on. 19,20 were clean aswell and then home. The last loop was very rough and physical with lots of deadfall everywhere.

Pretty solid middle distance race for me, just a pity to be at the back of the bunch. maybe lost 1min3o/2min with hesitating and a few errors. Running wasnt the issue i just focused on the nav part seeing as that is where i leak time.

Running on the model long distance with Nick this morning. Rough enough going with lots of green and hashed green being tricky to get through. Nice path network and the open land is fairly runable. Very different to back home. Nice day for it aswell seeing as it wasnt too hot and bit of drizzle.

Easy one around the complex in Palmela, Portugal with Hugh and Conor just to get the legs turning over. Then threw the legs into the pool after for the calves. Dooby picked quite the place for us to crash, he will be staying on as director for some time i suspect at this rate.

Note

Back log of training completed after the fieldtrip and a stressful few days. Not much done last week due to long hours looking at cliffs. It wasnt all bad though as got to spend an afternoon fossil hunting and get credits for it.
