Straight Line: 11.2km, 280m climb (No GPS so rough guess of distance)
After a good first day it was time for some fun on the long distance stuff. Having run on the model map previously with nick i can safely say it was no use whatsoever in the scheme of things as the terrains were quite different in my eyes. Also different mapper for model and actual race.
Started with a Belgian and Russian. They tore off at the start and as i spiked number 1 and turned to come out of it i saw the russian coming in towards me having followed the Belgian the wrong way. Went pretty straight line to 2 and then dropped into the open for 3 partially for ease of entry to the control and also to see what that stuff looked like for later in the course. Caught a glimpse of the red jersey of Russia leaving it as i was coming in. Next came the long leg to 4, thought what are my strengths (running), so went the longer but simpler track route, probably in hindsight could have cut parts of this off but didnt see them at the time, then through some small paths to get to near four and got to it to see Tove coming in like a steam train after me. It proved to be smart to avoid the green as this is what proved to be the undo-ing of conor on the day as he decided to fight it, the green won that battle. Guessed Tove was going my way for number 5 so stuck with her, dropped a bit low, fell in a hole, then relocated and into the control. Took the path route to 6 running around instead of through the terrain and got it cleanly. For 7 i went back along some of the paths I used to get to 4 and then got the control fine. 8 was where i made another mistake, got confused with all the fire breaks as to where i was, maybe lost 90sec/2minutes here for not sticking on my bearing and being confident on it. Along the same track i used for 3-4 in order to get to 9 which i hit cleanly, passed conor on the way coming towards me early in his course. 10,11, 12 i was hesitant with the green patches but was clean and had no issue finding the kites which were where i expect them to be (unlike on ocassions). On route to 13 i took on some water and some gel on route and got this clean, same with 14 and 15. Was thinking about 17 on route to 16 and headed off bearing to 16, missed it, relocated and lost mayb 1minute here aswell on a short and pretty easy leg because i lost focus. Took the round route to 17 on the road instead of the up and down through the green option, i think the smart choice. 18 and 19 were clean aswell. Lost maybe 1minute/70sec to 20 though as was hesitant, hit the wrong control, then overshot a bit and had to come back, silly at the late stage in the race to bin time like this. 21,22,23 were all clean at the back end.
Tough demanding course both technically in picking and executing your route choices and physically. No sun beating down but still very humid and was sweating and breathing heavy after the run to the start area.
