Cork O SL#4 - Ballincollig Regional Park
Long - 5km 18c

Nice evening for this one, dry and warm out in Ballincollig. Weird to be after going Old School tonight with manual hand punching. I tied the card to my pants which wasnt good as lots of the controls had a short punch cord and were hard to reach.

Bad start with control 1 being in the wrong place, found the knoll and could see the control, it was further west and further up a hill which based on no contours on the map doesnt actually exist. (Went back to check this after with zacosh just to be sure). Mistake to 2 struggling to find the small path and not used to the 1:75 scale, went in too early and then eventually it was a nice enough and obvious path. Lost maybe 60-90sec here just faffing. 3/4 were fine, drifted to 5 a bit which was dumb. 6 was fine. 7 said a fence but didnt know what side since it wasnt in the descriptions, obviously the kite wasnt on my side though!! 8 and 9 and 10 were good. 11 was weird the paths seemed to not match up with what i was expecting and didnt go in directions like on the map. Caught a glimpse of zacosh here and we had a chase until 13. Then across the grass to 14/15/16. Caught Andrew Turner at 16, that boy can run as he went past me on the grass to 17 when i was running in the region of low 3min/km but he punched 17 before me and stopped to let me navigate. Through the green to the main path and along a narrow one to lose him and sneak ahead. Then 18 was fine, it was on a track bend even though on the map the track seems to go straight.

Nice course but maybe the map could do with some work.

Note

Day spent around Belfast relaxing and being a tourist with Riina......didnt expect being a tourist to equate to 16.12km of walking around!! Nice day for the most part, then started to drizzle before an eventual downpour. Bus down to Dublin and then to cork. In bed aroun 1:30am.

Nice work by zacosh over the weekend at what sounds like it was a testing shamrock, physically, technically and weather wise. He did enough in the first 2 days to be able to run safe and smart on the 3rd day and be sure of his result.

Was staying with Susan and Davey last night and tonight again, very kind of them to let us crash at theres for the whole weekend. Davey even made banana bread and bacon sandwiches etc for us to take as a packed lunch incase we got hungry during the day.

Susan dropped us to the track. Chilled out for the first few races and then i went jogging with Emmet before ours. Nice jog and found out a bit about the Scottish team (Wales and NI were supposed to field teams too but didnt bother). Emmet and one of the Scots had PB's in the low 9minute range but the other Scot was about my go so i knew i was racing for 3rd place.
2 PM

Running (Track) race 10:13 [5] 3.0 km (3:24 / km)
shoes: Nike Zoom Rival MD8

Really windy and drizzley aswell so i assumed sub10 was not going to happen. Based on the PB's of guys in the field the best i could realistically do was 3rd so i just raced for place. The lead 2 were gone after the first 500m and i dropped the other Scot before the 1km split. Just kept chugging for the rest really with no chance of catching or getting caught.

First International race in an Irish Track vest so 3rd place and all my teeth in places is a good day.

Not sure of how IUAA did against SUCA as no team results are up as of yet.

Michael went from the gun and started with a 4:50mile. I was sitting with Darren (Navy) in 3/4 until the about 1.5miles in and he pulled away. Was isolated until 3.5mile where someone nearly caught me but i knew they were coming so sorted out how to deal with them. Just before they made the catch i put in a burst and they came. Then after mile 4 there was a small bit of flat and i kicked again, got a gap. Looked back with 1km to go and had about 20m or so which i knew would be enough for a downhill mile. Brought it home for 4th place and my best finish in any of the series races.

2 years ago i was 7th in this race, last year i 6th and this year 4th. The downside is 2 years ago i was low 27min, least year i was 26:31 and this year i was much slower. But with so much time alone i guess a fast time was never likely and with my lack of base work. Good over 3/4km at the moment for these races. About 9:45 through the first 3km

Now to rest for my first track representative race on Sunday in the IUAA v Athletics NI v SUCA where im doing the 3000mSC. An Irish vest in a second sport, not bad!!

Zac had a great run last night too. This time last year he was outside the 40minute barrier and this year he smashed that running 36:02 on the hilliest course of the series. He might get close to 35 flat which would be fairly shifting it.
