RI = 0.088 (example of where this doesn't work. Maybe a multiplication value based on the course, A=1.1, B=1.2 etc would give a better representation)

Riina was working so Markku picked me up after a doctors appointment for a guys evening orienteering! Event was pretty close to their house so we parked and changed and headed down then.

First 10 controls of the course were on the Tietävälä map and at 1:5000.Was mostly clean. Too high to 3 though and maybe the righthand route choice would have been better to 9. Was hesitant around 4 and 8 as visibility was very low in what was scattered trees, very different to the open white forest near 6 and 7. 10 was the map flip control.

Across the road and into the hiitokeskus section at 1:10000, didnt really have much issue with the scale change. Should have probably gone a bit straighter to 4 and taken the earlier path. Was too far east of 5 aswell but not much time lost. 7 was buried in some dense trees despite being marked white on the map so was a bit confused here.

Fun event and got chatting to Tuukka Tuomala, who is a big cheese in RaVa, the mind behind Yökuppi. Apparently is going to bring a Yökuppi t-shirt to 25manna for me. The Yökuppi guys go on an annual trip, this year is Iceland, so I put in a plug for Ireland in the future. Also turns out he knows ndobbs.........does everyone in Finland know him?!

Reasonable start and then rolled ankle leaving 2 and headed away in the wrong direction before correcting it. Apparently a nice view from control 5 but I forgot to look up and out. 7 (and 15) was a drinks control, didnt take any but it was apple juice or homemade beer by someone who lives near by, as if running in a straight line wasnt tough enough. Was standing on top of 8 and didnt see it, knew I was nearby but wasnt certain where. Ok to 9 and good to 10. Lost confidence on route to 11 so baile to the east to hit the open and go back in again. Passed a famous Finn on the way to control 12. 13 was fine and took road to 14 as the green looked bad, turns out it was reasonably get-through-able. Back to the drink station and back the road.


Hollola Route

Had a chat and got a photo with the famous Finn after the race. Sure she has 9 WOC gold medals but she wanted some tips from someone who has competed at prestigious, and I dont think thats too grand a term, events such as the Brass Monkey League.
