Note
(rest day)

Day off. Job Interview and rugby for the day. Travelling to Dungarvan tomorrow for an early start and then back to Fota with Jens for the other race. Good to have someone else crazy nearby!

He has too much free time and this is clearly not staged!

Running (Road) 10:27 [3] 1.66 km (6:17 / km) +28m 5:48 / km

Planned training tonight in Ballycotton. Drove over with zacosh and met Jens there. Did a shortish lap to warm up.

Orienteering ◪ 2:43 [3] 0.63 km (4:21 / km) +18m 3:48 / km

Course 3

Zacosh went course 1,2,3; Jens did 2,3,1 and I went for 3,1,2. Slowish start by the looks of the result. But the concept worked which I was a bit worried about. Used the pitch and putt course Bing Maps image and did some Night-o Aerial PhotO. Used the tee-boxes and in some cases the knolls about the place.

1st: Zac - 2:28
2nd: Jens - 2:31
3rd: Me - 2:43

Course 3 Route

Orienteering ◪ 3:06 [3] 0.77 km (4:03 / km) +16m 3:39 / km

Course 1

Switched maps at the cars and we started again. Did all these first 3 courses as mass starts since they followed different routes but used common central controls. Looked really cool with headlamps and the lighthouse in the background. Faster this time around.

1st: Me - 3:06
2nd: Jens - 3:16
3rd: Zac - 4:15 (He had watch problems and guessed but I'd assume he was faster than this)

Orienteering ◪ 2:54 [3] 0.69 km (4:11 / km) +16m 3:45 / km

Course 2

Another mass start after some trash talking again.

1st: Me - 2:55
2nd: Zac - 3:03
3rd: Jens - 3:26

This was the last of the 3 heats.

Course 2 Route

Orienteering ◪ 3:22 [3] 0.85 km (3:59 / km) +17m 3:37 / km
spiked:14/14c shoes: Asics Gel Noosa Tri10

Mass start

Straight non-forked mass start race. Zac took off like a scalded cat to the first loop. Could hear Jens laughing at one stage since it looked ridiculous having a small train going. Got a gap small gap before 8 and tried night stealt tactics on the downhill switching off the headlamp.....didnt work! We all stayed pretty much together for the whole course, build some lactic before the last race.

1st: Me - 3:23
2nd: Jens - 3:25
3rd: Zac - 3:26

Mass Start Route

Based on this the overall times, added up on the spot, gave:

1st: Me - 12:07
2nd: Jens - 12:38 (+31sec)
3rd: Zac - 13:12 (+1:05)

So we decided to divide the time gaps by 3 with the leader to start first, then Jens at about 10sec and Zac at just over 20sec

Orienteering ◪ 5:19 [3] 1.19 km (4:28 / km) +15m 4:12 / km
spiked:26/26c shoes: Asics Gel Noosa Tri10

Chasing Start

The most complicated of the courses with lots of loops, maybe too many numbers in a small area as it got confusing. Was alone for the whole course and had some more fun.

1st: Me - 5:18
2nd: Jens - 6:25
3rd: Zac - 6:33

Chasing Start Route

Giving total times of (roughly):

1st: Me - 17:25
2nd: Jens - 19:03
3rd: Zac - 19:45

Running (Road) 14:21 [3] 2.29 km (6:16 / km) +33m 5:51 / km
shoes: Asics Gel Noosa Tri10

Slightly longer cool down loop. Down to 1℃ with a breeze off the sea by the time we finished.

Concept definitely worked for a training idea, will have to look at more areas to try this out a bit more. Made the best use of a small and simple area possible. Might work on sand dunes or maybe open mountain areas too if the image is good enough.....further investigation required

Ran the schools orienteering course around Fota. Didn't use the punch card nor did I search for rolled up training kites. Just ran to the feature and then on. If I spotted the kite great.

When leaving saw some of the Clon lads punching controls out of order, I suppose you expect that from anyone down there.....

Took over pacing duties early after one guy was all over the shop in the first 600. Kept a steady pace. No real hip issues some tiredness near the end I guess since it hasn't moved this fast for this long in a good while.

Running (Track) 8:14 [4] 1.6 km (5:09 / km)

400m jog after the tempo and then 3*200, the guys were doing 6. Focused on form and not on the pace. Really lacking speed.

Intended to do a road lap but up at the top of the hill I got chased by a barking dog. Not a fan of dogs. Turned around and ran back down the hill and over the cliffs a bit. Heavy legs.

Think dads helping out Midleton College tomorrow for some orienteering so I might have a trot around. Then tempo and 200s in the evening

Straight away when I got the map there was the obvious massive leg to 2. Got 1 ok, and decided to go right of the line to 2 along the track till the hill top then drift below 11, through 3 and up the hill to 2. Got caught in some very heavy running here and ended up walking chunks. Disregarded the track as was too far around with too much climb at the end. Don't think anyone went the path (?). In the last section of the leg I could see a white top infront which I assumed was Colm O'Halloran. He came towards me going to 3 as I was still climbing. I was good into 2 and straight to 3 on my compass. To 4 I missed, looking at the GPS by metres just not seeing the kite and binned a minute. Then to 5 Colm was coming back downhill to get it. 11min catch made after 33mins, Ok start I thought.

Then the climb to 6 I spotted my boulder in the distance and just worked towards it. Spotted Hellsac heading from 2-3 which I didnt expect as I was last starter, he had childcare duties. Over the top to 7 and lost some time to 8 as it was in the heather. Colm got back ahead and punched 9 just before me too. Then he took off downhill to 10 and I wasnt confident enough. Closed to 11 as he wobbled a bit near it. Out climbed him to 12 and ran away to 13.

Then to 14 I lost confidence about midway through the leg it seems and for some reason I climbed. Then realised and dropped back down. I was on the line and all. Binned 2+mins here. Smooth to 15 and 16. Took the gel going to 17 on the long leg, bit off line but knew I was to the north so it was an easy fix. Aimed to the north of 18 for 2 trees and then into the control, it was more obvious than I expected so couldve gone straighter. 19 and 20 were good. 21 was ok and 22 I binned another ~45sec in the circle. Last few were mostly ok but got pushed a bit by the vegetation to 25.

Positives from today were no hip pain at all, strength is somewhat coming back. Processes and excecution for the most part were good and I can see where the problems arose, mainly not trusting the compass. Negatives were the silly errors like to 14 which cost me big.

Last year I missed out on the Munster trophy by 59sec with Dooby winning in 67:53 and this year missed out by 1:42 to CillinC in a time of 101:10. c.hill was just simply in a league of his own today, I dont think anything wouldve stopped him getting the overall win.

Lots of work put in by Terry, Dermot, Pat, Donal and Tony to ensure today went off with no issues and Im delighted for them it did.
