Running (Road) race 17:37 [5] 5.0 km (3:31 / km) +35m 3:24 / km

Back for Castlerea parkrun round 2. Alone after 100m again this time so a lonely laps. Quite slippy underfoot especially on the sections under the trees with wet leaves and the bare rock sections along the river. Had the organisers screaming at me to work harder because they wanted to see another record.......just couldnt deliver it today.

Lap 1: 4:55 (previous: 4:58)
Lap 2: 5:05 (previous: 5:03) (total: 10:00 -> 10:01)
Lap 3: 5:06 (previous: 5:00) (total: 15:06 -> 15:01)
Lap 4: 2:31 (previous: 2:32) (total: 17:37 -> 17:33)

Laps 2&3 were the difference

Time @ 3000m:
10:41 (previous: 10:37)

Got the major scalp of Luke "Ming" Flanagan today apparently training for a marathon.

Afternoon recovery run around the 7km lap. Getting more used to this 7min/mile pace again. Productive day today fixing one of the GPS units, doing some data extraction and DB jiggerypokery. Bit misty out and a really strong head wind to the turn just before 3km.

Looking forward to getting in the forest and on some trails tomorrow. Gonna enjoy my weekend........and by weekend I mean Sunday......

Woken by the gang leaving for sampling this morning so started work at ~8am meaning I could easily slip out of the office at 5 to go for a gallop having queued all the robot reading on the printer.

Long day of data checking tomorrow but with a parkrun in the morning and probably a run tomorrow evening after work too of some sort.

Running (Road) 44:26 [3] 10.25 km (4:20 / km) +84m 4:10 / km

Started work at 9 today so I could leave the office at 5 and come back to do the GPS download and logging later in the evening. Should have 7 batches (100 samples per batch) ready for data checks by tomorrow evening and hopefully they can be shipped off early next week once the amendments are made to the DB. Spent some time today as well coming up with a design for a model to take the raw GPX data from GPS units, convert to features in Arc, save to a storage DB and then project into Irish Grid before saving into a final DB for sharing with GSI. Should speed up the morning jobs I have. Might have time on monday to play around with it a bit more.

Nice evening for a run and home perfectly in time for spag bol.

Running (Road) 45:19 [3] 10.06 km (4:30 / km) +76m 4:20 / km

Slightly longer run than yesterday. Long day dealing with the GSI which wasn’t fun. Planning to do the parkrun on Saturday in Castlerea and then heading to Lough Key Forest Park on Sunday morning to firstly help out, then race, then help out again at the SligOrienteering Club Score event there. Apparently I could be placed to supervise the SI and Or systems………had probably better learn how they work before then.

GPS missing tracking for first few km so distance from maps.

Warm up around quarantine then on the jog to the start area, loads of people……just under 1,900 people entered so a small bit larger than IOC Sprint.

SM Sprintti Karsinta 2017 – M21K1
Nervous in the start boxes as we worked through, 4 M21 heats all starting at the same time! Decent enough start until I was suddenly alone taking the right hand routechoice while all the other 3 heats and the m20s went left. According to the route analysis by Kalle Rantala this was the shortest route for my forking. Up the hill to 2 and in to 3, slightly easier controls. Didn’t get trapped on the route to 4 and took the western route. Poor decision leaving 4 and got caught between 2 minds running the first half of the western route before switching to the eastern option as I thought the passage I spotted was blocked. Southern route to 6 an avoided the climb of the straighter route, not sure if this was the best option or not. 7 was a gimmie control to catch you out on the next few legs. Western route to 8 and then back out the way I came to get to 9 and slightly north of the line to get to 10. Looking at the route analysis these were the 3 shortest routes for these legs. Through the railway underpass to 11 and then the southern option to 12, lost maybe 5 seconds at control 12 punching the control south of the trail as I was looking ahead to 13. Again took the southern option when the analysis suggests that the northern route was shorter. Clean for 14, 15, F. Obviously it would always be nice to be faster but as regards the process it was mostly pretty solid and in control. Heat was won by Timo Sild and Hannu Airila was the 13th place and last qualifier. 4 heats of 52 men with 13 men from each heat to qualify for the A final so was always going to be tough.

Fastest run in though in the heat!

Ended up 22nd in my heat, 1:48 behind the heat winner and ~30seconds off qualifying. On the plus side I wasn’t one of the top guys caught out by crossing things they shouldn’t. The organisers said on the arena intercom system “The following athletes have been disqualified:……”. Names included Yannick......

Cool down jog with some fluids and a bit of food. Then Blathnaid (worked on Tellus and is now living in Helsinki) came along to watch and have a chat.

Jog to the B final starts. Qualified for the B1 final (A, B1, B2, B3) so not a disaster. Guy calling the names asked me how to pronounce my surname before he had to say it out loud.

SM Sprintti Finaali 2017 – M21B1
Didnt pick the route to 1 quickly enough so had to re-evaluate quickly and do some damage limitation, was a smooth line to take the shorter northern route to number 2. 3 and 4 were fine. 5 I went north of the line, it was a bit longer but no climbing, came in through the first gate, maybe the second one would have been faster. 5-6 I made sure to check the descriptions do not to get caught on the wrong side of the wall like the Finn who started with me in the B2 final did. Southern route to 7, longer but easy running. Eastern route to 8 and then along the road, down the steps and through the underpass for 9. 10-11-12 were all smooth and clean on the route selection and execution. Southern route to 13 and up the first flight of stairs before switching to the grass. Spotted the straight but twisty option to 14 and then over the crossable wall en route to 15, over the railway line and north to get around the fence. A really tricky leg to pick an optimum route on since they both looked similar enough. Left control 15 to the north to pick the straight option to 16 and then on to 17, didn’t get caught out by the fence. Spotted both routes to 18 and settled on the northern option again which it turns out was slightly shorter and what swayed me was the fact it had a smoother line. 19-20-F were all fine.

Short and quick cool down before getting a recovery drink and some food in the shop. Invited by Blathnaid to come watch the Football final in the Woolshed Helsinki with the Helsinki Harps team, Riina’s first football experience. Train back out to Imala afterwards

Heres all the breakdown of the route choices for a good chunk of the courses
