In too early for an a.m. meeting I see another new to me but regular rider person on the trail. Connie lives within a mile of me and works near me but haven't seen her despite 1.5 years of shared commute lane. Would remember as she is riding a fixy with aero bars and moving right along.

Out too late with the lights I make the tunnel by less than 5 minutes. No one to pace with here. Given that I write this at 1130 its going to be a grind to ride in tomorrow at 5:45 for a 7am start.

Diet continues to suffer of late with the schedule. I swipe the snow peas K just picked from the yard today to accompany my seared tuna au poivre as cheer up. This helps. I am banking on the fact that I'll be out tomorrow before she notices.

TDF COLD TURKEY IS AN UGLY THING.

Out on the front edge of a huge storm. Likely record pace for a portion given the unparraleled huge motivation to get over the two elevated metal bridges before the lightning arrives. Make it over them and to Bethesda as the real excitement starts. Big rain (something like 3" in a few hours), horrible visibility, etc. for the last 10-15 minutes prevent my eclipsing any commute PR.

Over to the gym as it is dark and wet. Go for this as treadmills are full. Note that steady state HR=150 corresponds to 1400 cal/hr. This seems like too much of a power reading.

Side note to anyone thinking about getting a dog as a training buddy. It's a two-edged sword. Shadow misinterprets my packing a gym bag as prepping to run and goes through his normal pre-run stretch and bounce routine. He is crushed when he sees he's not going. On return I end up out in the rain at 11pm anyway to play ball with him. I also leave K a note to wake me for an a.m. run with him if it's not raining. Find myself wondering how this will work with kids added to the mix. While very abstract at present no doubt it will get specific in November.

Actually 4.? as they cut me off for closing before mile 5 was over. After the elliptical session I was curious about the HR. Warm-up slow then settle at 151 for 6:22 pace. This is faster than I would have guessed with the ride and elliptical in the bag just prior I would have expected more cardiac drift. HElps pass the time thinking about it.

Ride in drive home. Rolling great today. Even on the commuter MTB turning over smooth at a good clip into the wind. SHould be racing with this amount of fresh snap in the legs. Maybe next week as company in town for the weekend.

In: Given the known meeting times at work today, up way too late watching TDF. Post Snowshoe I have this large box of bar and goo medley and grab a flavor of the day as breakfast on my way out, if I remember to eat, which is about half the time. Today I grab the worst gel flavor I think I have ever had, vanilla bean. And it's overly watery to add insult. So I'm not in a happy mood.

Mental picture and pace improve upon running into Nadim on the way in. It's funny that we ride the same route as often as we do and don't see eachother at all. I suppose it's a combination of departure times and similarity of speed. Either way the conversation helps me motivate in. A good lesson in the psychology of training. Given that Nadim's new place is apparently only about 2-3 miles from me maybe we can organize to take advantage of proximity- stay motivated as the daylight ebbs later in the year.

Out: Hit the road right at the start of the wind, darkness, and downpour. So visually unappealling it's humorous really. At least it's warm.

Note

Despite Shadows enthusiasm no running today. As soon as the rain stops I take him to swim. He puts on an amazing swim sprint display while the creek is at flood stage. I just walk with some stretching.

RIght off the bike. Was ready for a rest but the wife had the lab whipped into a frenzy about going to run. Sometimes they conspire to interfere with a planned workout but today is one of those days where they keep me off the couch.

Late night yesterday and long day at work today. Good workouts. I'm whipped. Ankle feeling better but tight.

Ankle still sore so abort my planned run. Feels like a minor sprain. Very frustrating to have no idea what caused this.

Add a frame to the stable. A lemond chambery with a beat up paint job for 150 w headset bb and stem. This is going to be a rocket compared to my current rides.

A portion of the day spent daydreaming about sailing after doing boat web searches. Unfortunately all the boats I really like are out of my rice range (think way out-NASA funding required out- of range). Guess I'll stick with the $100 windsurfer and the trail running in the park.

hour after getting home. legs feel like its a mud bound slog although its not. couple weeks of bike focus has really cost me on the running. definately feeling the last two days of volume. Have also been overdoing the wine after several weeks of pre-snowshoe abstinence. contemplating an off-road duathlon this weekend but not feeling very fast.
