low effort walk 1:10:00 [1] 3.0 mi (23:20 / mi)
(injured) (rest day)

trying hard to maintain positive use of time but not able to run or ride so go for a long walk with kirby

one stumble in the woods and a sudden movement to regain balance shows enough left side pain still that I'm sure it's going to be a while before I'm back to doing anything at speed.

low effort walk 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

3 mph may be a generous allowance as it was certainly slow but it was farther and less slow than yesterday
kirby giving me a lot of funny looks and expecting some running
not happening

low effort walk 30:00 [1]
(injured) (rest day)

Extremely sore.
A real effort just to walk curb down to the stream and back.

rest 1 [1]
(injured) (rest day)

A real slow day. Able to move around upright with moderate pain if shuffling short steps. Significant pain in any transition between horizontal and vertical. Could easily see how chronic back pain would breed narcotic addiction. Hoping things will be slightly improved tomorrow.

bike 1:40:00 [2]
(injured)

Was going to be a typical weekend afternoon MTB route on the epic. Dialed way back due to being sore from late PM soccer maybe 35% less distance covered in first 30 vs last weeks speedfest. Only took it up briefly in the flow section at 1:10 which when combined with slightly impaired handling from fatigue proved to be catastrophic. At maybe 20mph on a downhill missed a landing area off a jump. Came down long, left, and over-rotated. Besides the fatigue a recently altered lip certainly contributed. Maybe 12 feet of carry and three feet of drop from the lip to where the front wheel touched down plus whatever vertical off the lip. Bookending last weeks best ride in years we now have the worst wipeout in as many.

Instant cantilever launch endo, 180 plus aerial rotation to body on ground impact, full on bounce, tumble roll, slide, etc covering quite some distance into the woods. Minus the multiple blunt impacts with the ground the sensation was more akin to getting worked when surfing bigger waves than my typical mtb wipeouts which seem usually to be washing laterally at speed.

After coming to rest start with inspecting helmet and checking for any obvious fractures to figure our if I need to be thinking ambulance. Nothing horrific but it was all I could do to get onto some asphalt covered direct route home.

At home cuts and abrasions inventory shows bloodied nose, forehead, back, shoulder, left elbow, left upper leg, butt. Try to get cleaned up and take in some food. From there mostly lying down. Late pm has everything tightening and getting sore. Excruciating left lower back if core muscles tensioned certain ways when rolling over. Wife suggests trip to hospital for back xray/mri but after probing it appears more soft tissue damage than spinal.

bike 1:38:00 [3]

Out solo from home on the Epic to the local trails.

This ride needs an asterisk of some sort.

Without any plan just warm up 10 min and then into what I consider a zone 3 effort. No intent to push but I am aware Kristin needs me to be back at a specific time so she can run. Look down at the watch on one of the crossings I use as a time mark around 15 min and … wow that's quick. Out of curiosity pick it up to what feels zone 4. Next major milestone produces an unbelievable jump in speed and the 30 min mark is beyond what I would have guessed possible for my current life situations. Inexplicably as good as last week's handling was this is massively better. Carrying boatloads of momentum through turns and rollers without feeling like there is a significant risk of serious negative outcome. At least five years if not a full decade since I've had this kind of speed with control. What a day.

Unfortunately I'm squared away enough to that zone 4 now puts me over the limit for sight lines on mixed use trails in this park so have to pull back to zone 3 for a lot of the ride. Really a strange sensation.

Not looking to hit a starting line anywhere but would be interested in a gauging ride with some other folks I know on a one way MTB only circuit to get a better external perspective.

Age is bringing a philosophy shift. I'm now at the point where I'm thinking if the workout needs to run past midnight a rest day is a better choice.
