Orienteering 35:00 [3] 2.8 km (12:30 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Some fun impromptu training at HW with Mike. After a couple easy memory-O warm-ups, Mike followed me on a line-O, then a short chase-the-fox course that I desgned on the spot. Mike was pretty impressive moving though it, and I made a huge mistake chasing him half-way through, so I never came close to catching him. Definitely a lot of fun, and something we should do again -- perhaps a more-or-less regular OCIN training session?

Orienteering 44:25 [1] 3.0 km (14:48 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Easy walk over the yellow course with Noga. This would have been a very fun course to do at speed -- very sprint-like and potentially confusing around the pioneer village area. I was pretty tired from the rogaine on Saturday, though, so it was great to just get out and enjoy a stroll through the park.

Orienteering race 5:56:00 [3] 15.0 mi (23:44 / mi)
shoes: MudClaw I

NSF's Cabin Fever 6-hour Score-O. I felt pretty sharp navigationally except for two mistakes. The first mistake was a parallel error that probably cost me 8 minutes. The other mistake probably cost me 3 minutes, though a huge stroke of fortune kept it from being much worse. As I was heading down the wrong trail, much further east of where I thought I was, I heard voices coming from the reentrant below, looked down, and spotted the control I was after, probably 200m away, through the woods. The fact that there were people there to attract my attention, and that I could see it was incredible, and quite a lifesaver.

Otherwise, it was a fairly clean run, although quite slow especially toward the end. Looking over the winners' routes, it's clear that I can do a much better job in the route planning stages. I probably did some unnecessary climb, which slowed me down considerably.

Field checking 3:20:00 [1] 5.0 mi (40:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Initial field checking at the Mounds. I knew that I was in trouble when I got to the park, started changing, and discovered that I had left my long pants at home. Grrr. I still tromped through the woods and was able to check most of the control sites, but my legs got much more torn up than I would have liked.

I'm pretty happy with the white course, start, and finish. But, as always, am starting to agonize over stream crossings. With my current courses, if it rains a lot before the event, advaced courses will have a crossable but annyoing stream fairly early in the course. There is probably time to re-design.
