Rocky Mtn. Goat. Nice event. I ran with Glen Tryson and Soupbone for most of the course, trading off the lead among us. We diverged after #16 when I decided to take the road instead of the direct route to #17. It was a bad decision to go it alone that late in the race -- the six eyes among us had helped us collectively compensate for our individual mistakes. I had gotten quite tired on the trail run to #17 and didn't count distance well when I attacked it. I lost a ton of time and probably 10 places in the race. Otherwise, it was a fairly clean run.

Day 2 of the Western Champs. Much more technical running. I did quite well on about 10 of the controls, but spent probably 20 minutes in or in-and-out of the circles for the other 7. I thought I did a very good job slowing down when necessary and choosing good attackpoints -- something that I had wanted to do given the more technical challenges given by this map. I don't have too many regrets about my route choices, either. But my performance in or near the circle was horrible -- something that I guess I need to practice.

I have really enjoyed and appreciated the course setting this weekend. The route choices today were excellent.

Day 1 of Western States Championship. I ran several fairly good legs, but had three or four medium-sized mistakes that cost me probably 20 minutes in total. The worst was at #10, where I was supposed to climb a hill, dip through the top of a reentrant, and then climb to a rocky area on the next spur. When I got to the top of the hill, I stupidly thought that I was on the spur -- both were rocky, and looked somewhat similar. It took me probably 4 minutes to figure out my mistake, but only after I had gone back down the hill. So I had to re-climb everything. In retrospect, it was a pretty stupid mistake (especially because as I crested the hill, other runners that I knew were on the red course continued on through the reentrant toward the control.)

Laramie Daze, day 4. Very fast course, very open. I didn't have any navigational problems of note, but there was not a lot of opportunity to make them.

One cowboy relay at Laramie Daze. I probably made about half as many big mistakes as I had controls. The technical precision required to run this course well was definitely a notch above my ability level. Fun event, but for me it has to be considered training -- not competition.

Laramie Daze, day 2. Similar run as yesterday--8 decent legs, one not-so-good leg, and 1 catastrophic leg that ends up spoiling my enjoyment of the race.
