Note
(rest day)

I think playing hockey this weekend was a mistake...

Nice trail run through very snowy trails. Tough workout. Also played hockey earlier in the day.

Trail Running 3:02:00 [3]
shoes: CL44

Lots of untouched snow on the trails this morning. Felt great to get out there and make fresh tracks. It was a hard workout as we got a fair bit of snow last night. I probably could have worn snowshoes for most of the run, but the Crosslites were excellent.

Now a half-day of work and then off to Haliburton. I've packed my Dions just in case I choose to feign an injury and head off for a snowshoe run while the rest of the guys play hockey. But I suppose that would be a bit antisocial...

Note
(rest day)

Didn't need a rest day, but since I'm heading off to Haliburton tomorrow for the annual boys' weekend, I decided to hang out with Rochelle and Kieran for the entirety of the evening. As well, since I'm taking the morning off work to run, I felt it would be better to wake up fresh rather than still feeling the effects of a late-night run.

Lots of shinny hockey ahead this weekend. I haven't played hockey since before we moved to Zimbabwe, so I'm screwed. The last time I skated was in 2008 at an indoor rink (obviously) in Johannesburg, South Africa, which involved very sketchy skates on crappy ice conditions. It's funny, but the last time I tobogganed was in the Namib Desert in Nambia, sliding down the large sand dunes on waxed toboggans. Enough of this fake stuff. It's time to become fully Canadian again!

Trail Running (Hills) 55:00 [3]
shoes: Grey

Easy hill repeats. Forgot my running pants, so went out in my shorts. After the spring conditions on Sunday, the trails are covered over with snow again. Only ran one stair climb at the end because the stairs were quite slippery.

This is going to be a bad week for running as far as my schedule is concerned, so I need to fit in a few more of these lunchtime runs.

Trail Running (Hills) 1:23:00 [3]
shoes: CL44

After 20 min, ran 40 min worth of hill repeats. Finished with a fast 20 min tempo. The snow was crisp and sticky, and my Crosslites were amazing on the trails. I just flew on the tempo run. At one point, a rabbit ran along beside me for a few yards before darting right in front of my feet and then into the underbrush. I wanted to slow down in the first minute, but then I just seemed to adapt to the pace and felt comfortable.

Trails are a muddy mess today, so went for a run on the paved trails along the Don Valley.

Trail Running 2:32:00 [3]
shoes: CL44

Had planned to get up early for a long run, but my son got sick and my wife was exhausted, so I was up until the early hours of the morning. And since we've got family coming for lunch, I had to split my long run in two. Will fit the second run in later this afternoon or evening.

Very muddy and slippery on the trails. Lots of loose dogs today, but I remained confident and had no trouble at all.

Road Running 1:55:00 [3]

First half great, second half shit. I think it's a lot easier to just do one long run than to split it in two.

Friday Feb 19, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Felt a bit slow and sluggish last night, so will rest up today so that I can run long tomorrow.

Trail Running 52:00 [3]
shoes: Grey

Easy noon trail run. Finished with two sets of the stair climb. Legs felt like jelly after the first one, but somehow stronger on the second, which makes absolutely no sense to me.
8 PM

Road Running 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: BL Orange

Slow and easy. Ran on the paved trails and roads along the river toward Sunnybrook Park. Very peaceful, particularly near the water.

Trail Running (Hills) 50:00 [3]
shoes: Grey

Long hill repeats. No dogs. Finished with the stair climb. Might try finishing with two sets of the stair climb on Thurs.
8 PM

Trail Running 1:17:00 [3]
shoes: CL44

Nice evening run on the trails. Lots of light reflecting off of the snowy trails and frozen river, so I only needed my headlamp for a short 15 minute section.

Trail Running 2:01:00 [3]

Felt very strong today, particularly during the second half of the run. Would have liked to have stayed out longer, but it is Family Day and I want to stay married...

Trail Running 2:03:00 [3]
shoes: CL44

Easy trail run through Crother's. Felt really good. The Petzyl Myo XP is a sweet headlamp.

Considering the first three days of this week were a washout, things came together okay overall. Hoping for eight solid weeks ahead.

Road Running 4:00:00 [3]
shoes: BL Orange

Easy road run. Didn't push the pace. Ran up Don Mills to Markham then down Vic Park to Danforth and back up Pape to Thorncliffe Park. Felt okay, but wouldn't have wanted to subject my feet to many more minutes of pavement.

Trail Running (Lunch Run) 53:00 [3]
shoes: CL44

Got impatient, so went for a trail run at noon. Due to the warm weather, the trails were mostly mud and melting snow but still had some good sections for running. The achilles felt fine on the run, with no pain or discomfort. I can tell that it's not as strong as it should be, but as long as I monitor it, I should be free and clear. I am very relieved. I will probably stick to the roads for my long run this weekend and give my body enough time to heal up before subjecting it to more trail running.

Finished with the stair climb. Good workout for the quads.

I finally drank the eastern-Ontario Kool-Aid and picked up a pair of Crosslites.

Easy run to the in-laws for supper after work.

Road Running 2:10:00 [3]
shoes: BL Orange

Easy run. Other than a few hills, I ran along a very flat route and kept to a slow and easy pace. No pain in the achilles, but I didn't push it too hard. Need to try a fast-paced run and also a trail run to see how it holds up, but will wait a few more days for that.

Road Running 1:12:00 [3]

Very easy run. Took it slow. Wore a pair of tanks on my feet. No pain, but knew that I didn't feel strong (or confident) enough to push things too hard. Not sure that I'm out of the woods yet, but I can chill a bit now that I've had a run without pain. Glad I took a couple of days off.

My calves have been very tight the last week, so need to let them relax a bit and stretch them out.

Tuesday Feb 9, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Had some achilles pain on the weekend. I don't think it's anything too serious, but will take today off as an extra precaution. My calves were pretty tight after some snowshoeing in deep snow, so I should have taken it easy rather than putting in another two hours of running in the snow. There's no swelling, the rear ankle area isn't painful to the touch and I feel fine walking, so it should be okay. Will take it easy tomorrow and check out the situation.

Easy lunch run. Lots of snow on the trails today, so a bit more slippery than yesterday. Was up until 2 AM stressing about work assignments, so feeling pretty tired today. Put in some hill repeats and then finished with the stair climb. I leave for Winnipeg tomorrow, so may skip my run this evening to hang out longer with my wife.

Leg Work

2 x 15 single calf raises; 2 x 15 hip extensions; 2 x 15 two-legged squats
12 PM

Trail Running (Hills) 50:00 [3]
shoes: Grey

Lunch run at Crowther. Since I'll be in flat Winnipeg for six days come Thursday, I figure I should try to get in some hill work while I can. Felt great on the trails. Was moving quickly early on, then came upon a woman with six unleashed dogs. She didn't seem to care that they kept running back and forth at me, as she was engrossed in her phone conversation. So I turned around and went back the way I came. On my hill repeats, I ran by another woman with an unleashed dog and this one bit (or nipped??) me on my left calf. She paused in her phone conversation long enough to ask if I was okay. I don't hate dogs, but really wish their owners would keep them from jumping/biting/intimidating others.

Finished with the stair climb.

At the in-laws for an early dinner tonight, so will only get in another 45-min run for the commute. Unless, of course, I go out for a third run of the day, but that seems a bit excessive.
5 PM

Road Running 47:00 [3]

Easy commute to the in-laws for dinner after work.

Monday Feb 1, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Feeling good. I take Mondays off to hang out with Kieran for Boys' Night while Rochelle goes out with friends. It's probably good to give my legs some rest anyway.

Note

Core Work

2 x 15 crunches; 2 x 10 leg raises; 2 x 15 bicycle (?) crunches; plank (45 sec); 2 x 12 push-ups

I'm a weakling, so I need to keep doing these.
