Trail Running (Race) 26:40:00 [3] 100.0 mi (16:00 / mi)
(sick) shoes: BL Orange

Wore La Sportiva Crosslites for the first three loops, then switched to Brooks Launch for the duration of the race.

Not the race I planned on. Very sick for most of the first 14 hrs. Nearly quit at the 30 K mark. Somehow managed to finish, but the race took many hours longer than expected. After feeling invincible running 60 K on the course route two weeks ago, I was humbled into near submission this weekend after only 20 K. The good news is that I know I can run a 100-mile race well as long as I'm feeling healthy. We'll see what happens at Hali.

When I woke up this morning, I wondered if it was all a dream and frantically looked at my bedside table to see if the Sulphur Springs belt buckle was there. Yep, I actually did it.

Trail Running 31:00 [3]
shoes: BL Orange

Easy run. Saw more deer this evening, which was cool. Elevators were out when I got back to the apt, so had to walk up 17 flights. Not feeling great, but staying calm.

Trail Running 45:00 [3]
shoes: CL

Easy run. First 20 mins on rolling hills, second half on easy single track. Saw a young stag near the end of the run. Looking very noble.

Right knee still a bit tight and my body sluggish, but hopefully all will be well come Saturday.

Trail Running 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: CL

Slow and sluggish. Lots of hills and technical sections. Left hamstring and right knee a bit tight, so stopped 30 mins earlier than planned. No worries.

Road Running (Chariot) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Yellow Rocket

Took Kieran to the Zoo this morning, so lots of walking. Instead of going for my scheduled trail run this afternoon, I took a long nap when he did. Lazy. Went for an easy run this evening and pushed Kieran in the Chariot before putting him to bed. Will try to get in a two-hour run tomorrow.

Trail Running 1:01:00 [3]
shoes: CL

Went out for a night run on the trails with my headlamp. Was nice except for near the end when some idiots hanging out in the woods started shouting at me and taunting me. The joys of urban trails.

Road Running (Chariot) 1:03:00 [3]
shoes: Yellow Rocket

Took Kieran out in the Chariot after supper.
8 PM

Trail Running 32:00 [3]

Short trail run after putting Kieran to bed. Would have gone longer, but it's Lost night.

2 PM

Trail Running 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: Black100

Felt a bit tight for the first eight minutes and then loosened up nicely. Kept to an easy pace, but ran all the hills.

Trail Running 7:03:00 [3]
shoes: CL

Ran at Sulphur Springs. Went with a group (one group for first loop, then a different group for second and third loop), so a bit slower than I'm used to. Was nice to connect with other runners though. I broke away with another runner early on the third loop (his second loop) and we ran the hills. The third was my fastest loop. Wasn't sure how the day would go, but my knee didn't let me down. I feel great. Would have been happy to run a fourth loop.

Note
(rest day)

At a conference for work all day and evening. Aagh!

Thursday May 13, 2010 #

Road Running 46:00 [3]
shoes: Black100

Ran to in-laws. Cold, windy and wet. Brutal out tonight, so I've decided to wimp out on second run and stay inside where it's warm and dry.

Road Running 1:03:00 [3]
shoes: BL Orange

Really tight ITB tonight along right knee, so decided to cut run short rather than risk a flare up. Have been delinquent with the stretching and rolling lately.

Me + Roads + Bulky Shoes = ITB problems.

Trail Running 50:00 [3]
shoes: Grey

Nice cool weather. Right hip was tight this morning, but loosened up on the run.

Trail Running 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: CL44

Lots of leaves on the trees now, so much darker once the sun sets. Will bring the Myo next time out instead of the Tikka XP. Feeling tired today, so cut the run short.

Road Running 1:00:00 [3]

Easy morning run. Will get in another one later today.
9 PM

Road Running 1:06:00 [3]
shoes: BL Orange

Easy evening run. Feeling good. A bit annoyed that I took three days off this week, but I'm very pleased with how the four days of training went. I expect to have a solid week ahead of me before tapering for Sulphur.

Saturday May 8, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

I feel good, but with family time in Kingston, travel to Toronto and an evening dinner event for work, I couldn't fit in a run. That makes three days off this week. Yikes.

Trail Running 6:00:00 [3]
shoes: CL

Great long run at Frontenac with Spaff. We were out for nearly 6:30, but took some breaks to filter water and have a few smokes. Six hours total running. Felt good, but still congested so lots of coughing and runny nose.

Great milkshake after. I pulled the famous "Oh I forgot my wallet" trick, so Derrick had to treat. I did actually forget it...

Road Running 25:00 [3]
(rest day) shoes: BL Orange

Dead legs. Knew I needed a break on Monday, and usually take a break on Mondays, but figured since I wouldn't be able to run on Thursday I should just keep plugging along until then. Tried to run tonight and failed. Now I'm wiped out and my left hamstring is not happy.

After a 14-hr week while sick, including lots of hills on the weekend, I'm probably wiped out at this point.

This week's lesson: It's always better to take a rest day on your own terms than to have your body surrender on you.

Trail Running 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: Black100

A bit tired, so took it easy. Really enjoyed myself tonight on the trails. Picked up the pace for the final 20 mins, which I haven't been able to do in weeks.

Road Running 2:00:00 [3]
shoes: BL Orange

Meant to take it easy tonight, but ran a few too many hills early on. Got pretty hungry tonight as well, probably because I had such a light supper. The second hour was tough. Nice evening breeze though.

Trail Running 2:13:00 [3]
shoes: Black100

Still congested, but feeling better today, albeit a bit tired. Only had two hours this afternoon to run, so made it count. Lots of hills and threw down a crazy five-minute tempo run (was fast for me). Also treated myself to another 20-mins of barefoot running at Sunnybrook. On my way back, was detoured by the police due to a suicide in the woods.

Good workout today. Very hot, so kept wishing for the rain to fall but it never did.
10 PM

Road Running 32:00 [3]
shoes: Yellow Rocket

Easy night run to loosen up the legs.

Trail Running 4:02:00 [3]
(sick) shoes: BL Orange

Still a bit sick. Didn't hear or respond to my alarm this morning, so lost my chance at a real long run. Didn't actually want to run and almost talked myself out of going. Felt okay after the first 30 mins or so.

It was a very casual run but with lots of hills. Treated myself to 20 mins of barefoot running at Sunnybrook Park on the grass. Felt great to go shoeless on the soft ground.
