R'adys Mountain Marathon 2nd day.

On the second day we started at 8am. Only one team made it to the chasing start (1h behind the leader) all the the other teams of our class started in the mass start. We started out through the village of Arosa and it was tempting to go for Coffee and Gipfeli somewhere... But we went on and saw our Czech couple on the second control. We got slightly ahead to the third but to the fourth we had again a long route choice, again back to the Urdenensee. Later it turned out that we took a slightly longer route and lost 5'-10' (on a almost 2h leg). We never saw the Czech couple again... After another 400m climb around the Parpaner Schwarzhorn we knew that from now on it was mostly downhill (with two or three 100m climbs in between), so we were very confident to make it back in time. On #7 I made my only navigation error and we probably lost 15'. #8 was another long one (1h) along a hillside. From there we just had to go down 500m to the Lenzerheide and run around the lake. We suddenly realized that it would be tight to make the cut-off and started to jog again, despite our very tired legs.

It was fantastic to arrive at the finish. The crew was cheering for us and we were just glad that it was finally over...

With 17h35' we were 7h35 behind the winner (Chris Near and Tim Higginbottom) and last (of the finishers) but I'm very happy that we managed to finish it!

R'adys Mountain Marathon.
For my seventh start at the R'adys Mountain Marathon (formerly known als MIMM or KIMM) I finally found someone stupid enough to sign up for category 1: Orienteering Long (thus technically difficult and long). For Valy (a Jungrau Marathon Finisher) and me the one and only goal was clear: finish the course in time! More than a marathon each day (calculated as distance in bee-line plus altimeter x 10) was on the program and this carrying a backpack with all you need (tent, cooking gear, food, etc...) for two days.

The start was right above the Lenzerheide and luckily we could take the gondola to get to the start. The weather was still foggy and slightly cold, so the restaurant filled with nervous competitors before the start. At 10:30 we went off, grabbed a sheet with the coordinates of our controls on it and copied the first few onto our maps. Since we studied the possible first controls the evening before our route choice to the first was immediately clear and we could take off. I let Valy set the pace because I knew that since he is older and wiser he wouldn't go out too fast as I would do usually. We ran a bit on the flat parts but walked all the uphills (which were a lot if you have to do 2470m...). We found the first three controls well and had a huge routechoice to the fourth. I decided to do the safer but slightly longer one which later turned out to be the same one as the winners took. This was the first time we saw a Czech couple both aged over 50 but keeping a very similar pace as we did. We went on to control 5 and 6 from where we could see the camp at the Schwellisee, right above Arosa. But we knew that we're only halfway and that we still had a long way to go. The hike up to the Hörnlihütte went well and the area behind (Urdenensee) I knew from biking there last year. The Czech couple was slightly faster on the downhills but we were slightly better navigating. We had to go back from the Urdenensee over Carmännapass (another 400m climb as dessert...) and finished with some technical controls above Arosa. The Czech couple missed #11 but could catch up to #13. We took a slightly better route to the last one and could finish maybe a minute ahead of them.

Despite being in the camp this doesn't mean that you can relax. You have to put up the tent and cook so that you get enough sleep and food. This is where the problem started, I could just set up the tent and prepare some noodle soup but after a few spoons my stomach rebelled. I just could not eat anything else and felt completely exhausted. I was also getting cold, so I got in my sleeping bag and doze off... I knew that I would have to eat more if I wanted to run the next day but it was just not the time for it.
I woke up in the middle of the night and felt much better. So I grabbed a couple nut bars and went back to bed.

I knew that I would need even more energy, so I got up at 5:30 and cooked some polenta. I can't imagine any better things than polenta at 6am on a Sunday morning! After another half an hour in the sleeping bag I was finally ready for the second day!

Orienteering race 1:10:00 [3] 8.7 km (8:03 / km) +315m 6:49 / km
shoes: VJ Sarva 08
Hindelbanker Abend OL - Bütikofen
Even in the summer the Bütikofen gives for a good o experience. A bit greener than in winter but still nice. I wasn't sure which course I should run but decided to do the longest. May have been a mistake because I started to loose focus and motivation after 45' and didn't push at all which you actually see when you check the results.
Bike 1:10:00 [3] 25 km (2:48 / km)
Bike to work and back plus biking to the o-event.
