Bike race 5:17:57 [4] 82.0 km (15.5 kph) +2604m

Half of the Nationalpark Bike Marathon.
It started out so well... In the morning (Start 7:15) the speaker said that the expected bad weather will stay away, it would be raining but not as bad as predicted the day before. So we went off in good weather and I had even the feeling that I was dressed too warm. First 1140m climb to Costainas I took rather easy and enjoyed the scenery. After the first steep downhill followed by a boring road downhill we went off into the second climb with some rain. Not too bad on the uphill but at the top of Döss Radond I got into a hail storm. The storm went away quickly but the temperatures droped considerably. A very nice stretch followed along the Val Mora. Already a bit cold I was glad for the short uphill to Valle Alpisella to warm up. It didn't help much and I was freezing down in Livigno. It didn't change much on the next uphill and thunder and heavy rain was with us. More and more bickers came backwards and when a very cold wind and snow hit me I decided to turn around as well. I was very cold and when I arrived in Livigno it took me more than an hour and two coffees to warm up. I also learned that the race was cancelled and no one was allowed to pass the pass I was just biking up to. Apparently they had 20cm of snow and subzero temperatures with strong winds. It took the organizer quite some time to shuttle back the 500 bikers from Livigno and considerably more to dhuttle back the bikes.
Also my brother (who started for a shorter race and was ahead of me) got stuck ip at the pass and had to abandon the race.

But worst was Irene on the shortest race. She also got into the storm and was fine until the last downhill. There she got so cold that halfway down she ask the first aid for a hot tea. They did not let her go on but she was flown to the hospital with sone other competitors. She had a body temperature of 34.0 C and had to stay at the hospital for a couple of hours to warm up..
