fun day in leadville for sure. had breakfast at home before driving up. same at before Dirty 30 - 2 packs oatmeal, 1 large banana and a spoonful of pb. going with 2 packs of oats going forward as I was still hungry before the start and at a peanut butter coffee while handing out in the leadville coffee shop before the race.
maggie and i jogged for about 10' before the race down to the gas station to use the bathroom because the line for the 12 port-o-johns was super long. I got right on the front and the gone went off. we started with the half marathoners so quite a few fast guys went off the the front along with timmy parr and aish... which i knew would be the case and there would be no chasing from me.
the first 2+ miles is climb and i could tell i didn't have my climbing legs, which I knew would be the case. It's the reason why I know cycling makes me a better climber running... and all the cycling had my climbing muscles tired. I just made decision to not chase anybody on the climbs or to try to keep... just do my own thing... definitely a change in how i normally would race but I didn't want to go to the well today.
I was with the same group all day... 4th-8th and switched places numerous times. at the top of climb at mile 5 i was in 8th but was moving really well on the flats and descents and easily moved into 5th and stayed there until mosquito pass.
I didn't really really realize how rocky the 3 miles up to MP would be and how much traffic there would be from the half marathon. it was kind of a shitshow.... as if hiking up to 13,200 wasn't hard enough i had to dodge people ripping down and move around pass hundreds of people going up. i was reeling in 4th place but I got caught by one dude about half way up... and then by Scott Jaimie (legend... doing #hardman = leadman and hardrock) with about .25 to go and he dropped me no problem... his hiking skills are unreal.
at the top i was 7th but passed a guy and descent and moved in 6th but scott and the other dude dropped me. i just kept doing my thing but I got passed back at the mile 16 aid station just as we came off mosquito pass.
I slammed some coke and kept rolling. Like Shad told my the climbing from mile 19-21 is a bitch. full on power hike in the blazing sun and my slowest miles of the day. I was able to get back to Scott (5th) and 6th place at the base of the climb and stick with them. About 3/4 of the way Scott dropped us and was long gone and i was hanging on by a thread to the now 6th place guy.
After the mile 21 aid station there is steep technical descent and I was staying with 6th but once we got to the open road he dropped me. I could see him just ahead for the rest of the race but didn't have the gears to close. ran strong to the finish and held on to 7th in 4:12. Had to run the last mile on the road hard (6:16) as I was getting chased down. That pace actually felt good!
Maggie got win in 4:29... almost tracked me down!!
really fun day and I suffered quite a bit but in a good way. didn't go to the well. wasn't smashed when i was done... just tired in a good way.
8 Vfuels gels in a flask, 1 honey stinger waffle, 1 flask of skratch, and 4 small cups of coke. with as tired as i was i should have eaten even more during the race and i probably would have run/hiked the final climbs a bit stronger. i am going to have to pound calories at the Silver Rush 50 run... getting kind of nervous about it.
