Euromeeting LOng Distance

Disappointing way to end the season. Started off with what felt like a good purpose, but through the green sections to 3-5 I just didn't seem to get into race mode, searching early for controls and losing focus on what I was doing. A mistake in the circle on 5 meant I was caught by my 2-minute man, and a control later I stupidly decided that I'd spotted a good round route to 7, to avoid some of the green I'd been struggling in - essentially for this leg I wimped out of the straight option more out of fear of the terrain than any good navigation reasons. Started to tire up the climbs to 11 and got caught by a couple of guys here. Had a gel and slotted in with them, and instantly felt like the pace was easy and that I was really fresh still; this was followed by a stupid error coming out of 14, where I started navigating to 16. The wind really went out of my sails here, but I tried to re-catch the two I had been with, and I think I saw the back of them on the way to 17, but then I drifted on the compass and lost another 2 mins searching for the control on a similar feature. Through the motions to the end, getting dragged along for 19 by a Swede, and catching a Czech who's gone through me somewhere here.

Shame to end the weekend on this note, I had felt like I was competitive in the terrain yesterday, but long distance still seems to be something I struggle to consistently push myself in.

Euromeeting Chasing Start. Started 25th, finished 19th.

Started ok, just using the Swiss guys in front, allowing Ojanaho to take the lead into the control as I knew he would be the guy to follow for the next through. He put a big effort in to 3 and strung the group out a bit. I was quite hesitant here and reckon I could have picked a better line over some crags instead of getting stuck in the train, but there wasn't much point in wasting the energy. All fine through to the butterfly, and I hit it 2nd in our group, just behind OO and then we split. I was leading the pack from here through the first butterfly, catching sight of the group ahead coming into 8, and I could see them 30s ahead through to 12, but I messed up the line back to the butterfly and then had a 40 second gap to close down, which over the next section just wasn't going to happen. Started to fatigue in the marshes as a couple of Swedes took the lead of our group, who then lead it through to three controls to o, where I picked a bad line and lost a couple of paces, then missed the 2nd to last and allowed two of them to get away.
Pretty happy with my navigation on the whole; just focusing on my own thing through the butterfly, but then you didn't have to do too much nav on the longer legs. Good fun though, I'm a fan of this format, though an extra butterfly loop probably would have been good to split the packs a bit more.

Euromeeting Prologue. Stomach wasn't feeling great, I think I ate too much before. Navigation was fine on the whole though, apart from not executing the two longer legs (4 and 8) particularly well. Lost maybe a minute on these two. Just never felt like I really got going.
