Day 8: Munda biddi

Ride from Wungong Campsite to Karinyah.

Today we planned to have a half day ride so that we were fresh for the last day of riding. This was well needed.

Had a fast decent into the canning river and hard slog out of it, however a nice fast ride overall.

After the ride, we drove down to get some fast food from Gosnells. Went back to the hut for the night and setup the tents in the shelter. Thank goodness for that as it rained overnight. Good thing we checked the weather forcast.

Actual ride time was 2:29

Day 7: Munda Biddi

Ride from Whittakers Mill to Wungong Campsite.

Did not leave until 11:30! We blame the girls at the Pinjarra Campsite. They took ages to get up and it took a while to reload cars and our packs into my Hyundai excel which drew drove for us for support.

This would have to be one of the toughest parts of the ride. Between Whitakers mill and Jarrahdale was some of the worst pea ball gravel and climbs we had for the entire trip.

Nice fast decent into the Serpantine valley and missed some signage after this and managed to go a bit further, but had an easier climb out.

Arrived at jarrahdale around 3:15 and shoved down some food before having to speed out to the Wungong Campsite before it got dark. Luckily the trail was tightly packed and we were able to hold a 18-20km/hr pace for the last 26kms. We made it in just after sunset with a little light left over.

Meet drew with the car near the campsite. He managed to get the excel pretty much most of the way to the campsite and we had a short carry of gear.

We setup the tents in the campsite shelter to keep warmer these nights. It made a difference.

Day 6: Munda Biddi

Baden Powell to Whittakers mill.

Late start this morning as it would have been sub zero degrees in baden powell and was still 4° at 10am. We now had a replacement bike for Andy (he used Amanda's). We spent a little time getting the racks on it and swapped pedals and seats over etc.

Drew was going to ride with us this day, however his knee was giving him way too much grief. He went off to get it looked at by a doc this day.

My cold was not getting much better, but I powered on this day.

Hard slog out of Baden Powell to Dwellingup, although it did not seam to take long. Had some food at the general store and kept going.

Today was all about climbing hills after we had got to the valley in Baden Powell. After leaving dwellingup we had climb after climb after climb and all of them got more difficult as the ground was getting dryer and pea ball gravel was coming out in force to get us on the hills.

Finally got to Whittakers mill to find it was closed and all camping was banned. So we got driven out to Pinjarra for a campsite there. Showers were good this time and it was a hell of a lot warmer than Baden Powell.

Bad news from Drew this day. He went to the docs and found he had damaged some cartalidge in his knee. He was not to ride for at least 4 weeks. He is now out, however he was going to continue as support crew for us while the girls were leaving us.

Day 5: Munda biddi

Kent Rd (south of lake brockman) to Baden Powell (dwellingup)

My mate (Drew) with the sore knee could not ride for the day as he had to get back to perth for some things as well as pick up a replacement bike for Andy. Andy used drew's bike for the day.

Well...this was a good hard slog day. Andy and myself smashed out the day in really good pace. Climbing hills faster, speeding down the hills quicker and taking less breaks. We saw 3 other people coming southbound on the traiil that were riding slower down the hills than we were climbing them.

Had a funny moment were there was a big fallen tree followed by a small little one and Andy tried to get through it. He failed and got stuck with his backpack in there. I forced him to stay in that position while i grabbed a quick snap on the camera.

There was a diversion put in place just south of the Bidjar Ngoulin Campsite which sent us on a new and extremely bad bit of track. It was very corregated and we found it difficult to keep a pace above 8km/hr. The thing that was worst is that we could see a perfectly smooth bit of gravel road (nanga road) less than 5m away from us that we would have enjoyed more. The rest of the diversion was good with a 80m drop over 2km. Nice and fast through there.

The rest of the ride to nanga was a fast ride with us sitting about 20km/hr for about 15km or so.

Got to nanga to quickly shove down some food and get over to baden powell. Around tony's bend there was a bunch of kids in a group on the Munda biddi track that we almost flew into as they spread across the road like a herd of sheep. They made us loose momentum up a very steep climb. We were not impressed.

As we flew down the road into the murray river we had another group of kids walking on the bridge that did not clear until we were metres from hitting them even after we shouted ahead. Kids these days are almost as stupid as kangaroos or rabbits at night with a cars headlamp.

Day 4: Munda biddi

Honeymoon Pool to Kent Rd (just south of lake brockman)

No packs today. Support crew taking them :)

To make up the distance we missed on Monday we had to do a lot!

Bitterly cold start at Honeymoon pool would have seen us start in no more than 1-2°C. Good start with some big climbs at river road. Fantastic views and some of the best looking forrestry and scenery on the trip. It was very green, the ground was nice and moist and gave us plently of grip.

Bypassed Collie and kept breaks to a minimum. Made it to Yarri Campsite for Lunch. Cooling down was the thing that hurt us the most. Trying to get warm in a sheltered forrest was difficult.

Lost the track in a few places because the markers were missing because of fires. Managed to put in a bonus loop of 2 more kms.

About 5km from the end of the day Andy broke 3 spokes and buckled his back wheel beyond repair, leaving his bike unrideable. We kicked it back into shape and rolled down hills and pedalled as much as he could with it rubbing. This involved a few walks up hills for all of us.

Drew (of of the guys) hurt pretty bad after this day. For one he had never riden that far in a day before and without us really knowing on day 2 he injured his knee and did not mention it to us.

We were very glad to find the car waiting for us at the end of the day to take us to Lake Brockman Caravan park were we could shower, although if we had a shower at the same time we cut the other persons hot water out, That was not too much fun.

Actual ride time on my speedo was 5:44

Day 3: Munda biddi

Donnybrook to Honeymoon Pool.

Today saw us all dry and all ready for some big hill climbing and there was plent of it. We still had our 20kg panniers on and that gave us a few challenges up the hills. The other guys were certainly not as prepared for hill climbing and I always got up them first and could admire the view.

I would have to saw this part of the trip was one of the more favorite days with the weather beautiful and the scenery fantastic.

Upon arriving at Honeymoon pool we were expecting to have our support crew (my girlfriend amanda and the wife of one of my riding mates) meeting us there. They did not arrive until an hour after we got there so we go the fire going as the temperature in that valley dropped really fast.

Actual ride time on my trip computer was 2:57 (the other guys took a while up hills)

Day 2: Munda biddi trail

Well the original plan was supposed to be a 90km day riding from Jarrahwood hut to the Nglang Boodja Campsite. Well the rain soon stopped us.

We made it about 20km before the rain came in and rained all the way into donnybrook. We were completely drentched and decided to stay in donnybrook for the night as we did not want to catch a cold. I caught one anyway.
