After flying across the country, luckily the Terranovas are just like Brian and I, and they have their bikes up on trainers...and were ok with us using them! It meant I was able to get the blood flowing after the traveling. Just in case I can't do anything on Saturday, I didn't want to take several days off...

Went to the gym with Brian, and erged away...just for variety from the bike (which I'll be stuck on for the next several days). Mixed in an interval workout, just for funsies, but really just tried to get in a full hour of movement. I did use the erg (and do intervals) at the same time the girls were at the track - and took a bit of solice in that...solidarity!

Biking (Easy spin) 1:30:00 [1] 24.0 mi (3:45 / mi)

After visiting Dr. Weiss and confirming my injury (partially torn hamstring), he told me I was allowed to cross train only (if it didn't hurt) and rest/stretch. With the US 50 mile champs on Saturday, I have to do everything I can to be healthy for the race...meaning spinning on the bike and not even attempting to run until I'm cleared to do so.

Warmed up with the team, was optimistic that I'd be ok to race...but after only a quick mile or so, I felt the tug in my leg...and knew that something was wrong and I was out for Jones. While I had a ton of fun cheering on my friends and teammates, it broke my heart to be on the sideline when I had been really looking forward to participating and helping my team.

I don't know what I did to my hamstring yesterday, but it sure hurts...I decided to rest up, and hope that I"m good to go for Jones tomorrow. Crossing my fingers, and stretching a ton.

Running (Tempo workout) 1:15:00 [3] 10.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Did a tempo workout with the girls at the track. Warmed up w/ Kelsey, then met up with everyone at the track. It was Rachael's workout, and she was on fire - I decided to pace Jess to a more reasonable tempo-type workout, doing 800s in 3:15 - 3:45 pace, with ~200m recovery. During the cooldown (outside, with Kelsey), I felt a pain in my leg, and I literally hobbled back to my car, hopeful that this isn't a bad injury...but we'll see.

Erging (Erg Olympics 2.0) 1:00:00 [3] 11.0 km (5:27 / km)

We did the erg olympics 2.0 tonight...it was so much fun, and killer again! I don't recall it all, but know my times were faster on the 2nd round. I cracked 21 in the 100m sprint. I deserved a good beer at the end of this class.

Running (Hill repeats) 50:00 [3] 6.1 mi (8:12 / mi)

Hill workout with Abby...this was a good intro to hill suffering (perhaps marking my registration for Mt. Washington?) - anyway, we warmed up a bit then did 4 repeats up 0.15 mile hill (84' gain?) - I think we averaged around 1:20, but we picked it up for the last interval; then did 4 repeats up 0.15 mile hill (81' gain?) - I think we averaged around 1:11, and again my last interval was fastest. Then, she punished me with 2 x 400m - 84, 83. This whole workout hurt, but it was great to remember how to make the legs burn on an uphill.

Easy run w/ Kelsey around Northampton...it was icy at parts, but we just slowed down and enjoyed the miles. :)

Running (Snow run) 1:05:00 [1] 6.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Snow run w/ Brad at Mt. Norwottuck trails. Luckily, everything was packed down pretty good so there wasn't much uneven/unstable running. Had a great time!

Erging (Erg Olympics) 1:00:00 [4] 12.0 km (5:00 / km)

For the last class, we did the erg olympics (for funsies!). Basically, Laura had us do a bunch of all-out efforts at different distances - so everything hurt so bad, but it was awesome! Did 100m (21.6, 21.0), 250m (54.0), 500m (1:53), 750m (2:40?), 1000m (3:52), and 100m at 16 spm (4:49). My legs wer burning at the end...it awe so much fun!!!

Running (Indoor Track workout) 1:10:00 [4] 9.0 mi (7:47 / mi)

Tuesday Track workout. With Jones this weekend, we decided to do a true speed workout - repeat 400s. My goal was to keep them below 1:30 (6:00 pace)...and I was successful. The thought was to do the first half of hte workout just below 1:30s, then crank it down for the 2nd half...but with Kelsey B. leaving after only 8 intervals, we cranked it up after 4, so my #5-8 are the fastest...and then I tried to do what I could for the last 4 without her to chase. We did 1:29, 1:27, 1:28, 1:29, 1:24 (x4), 1:26 (x4). I felt good, but certainly it was a hard workout. I am pleased to have so much speed in the legs - hopefully I'm starting this year off fast!

Ran w/ Frank B. at Ashley Res...but we quickly got bored of the muddy loop, and explored a bit of the snowmobile trails. They were packed down pretty good, so there wasn't much annoying unstable running. But, between the snow running and Frank's company, it made a drizzly nasty winter day a fun outdoor expereince. :)

This was essentially a day off, but I did jump on the bike for a while just to move the legs...but they felt so sluggish that I decided to take that as a sign and not do anymore. I wanted to do more training last week, but things fell apart as I was feeling crappy for a good portion of the week - so I'll take it as it is.

Spinning on the bike to warm-up as best I could for the erging race (while at home...but trying to shake it out since I knew my warmup would be limited)...and then I spun some when I got home since I know I had a short day of working out.

Running 15:00 [1] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Easy run, again, to shake things out since erging warmup time is limited.

Erging (CRASH-Bs) 30:00 [4] 6.5 km (4:37 / km)

Did CRASH-Bs...warmed up for about 20 minutes or so...doing some power 10s to get ready...then the race was on. I did well - faster than my qualifying time, and higher placing than my seed...so I was pleased! Rowed 2k in 7:48. Only bummer was that I didn't make the weight cut-off for lightweight, but whatever...awesome experience!

Easy run w/ Kelsey B. and Annie around the Jones course and then tacking on a few extra miles. Was a fun run...with some snow along the way and beautiful snow-covered trees.

Erging workout - can't even remember the workout, but know it was hard! :)

Running (Workout) 48:00 [4] 6.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Ran w/ Abby - did her workout of 2 x 400, 2 x 1200, 2 x 400...really as fast as we could go on dark roads (always ending on an uphill, net gain) with black ice...did 89, 86, then unknown, think 4:45ish for the 1200s, then 88, 85-86? Abby's watch was a bit messed up and I was relying on her for timing! Oh well...great workout - I don't know how Abby packs in such a good workout with such limited mileage, but it's awesome!!!

Totally bad day...I was up for a good portion of the night with some naseau...must have eaten something funky? Anyway, so I stayed home from work and slept in super late. I did jump on the trainer just to spin out the legs, but wanted to take it pretty easy.

Uuugghh...hard workout - did 8 min on/3 min off...by 5? This was hard - each interval had goal stroke rates (by the minute), and we were doing drills between them...tough day!

Running (Indoor Track Workout) 1:15:00 [3] 10.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Indoor Track workout - warmed up for several miles, then did 5 x 1000m at tempo pace (goal of feeling good, but hitting ~6:20 pace) with 400 easy recovery. Goal pace for 1000m was around 3:58, but I also didn't want to freak out and pick up the pace below tempo if I ran a lap too slow. I did well - 4:00, 3:55, 3:57, 3:57, 3:57. Felt good for all of them - the last one was the only one where my breathing was a bit elevated or my heartrate got up...otherwise I felt like I was running comfortably hard and cruising. It felt good that the girls relied on me to set the pace and they just followed...awesome!

Easy spin on the bike...it was nothing but ice outside, so I felt it smart to stay inside and not risk anything stupid. So, I popped in some great TV episodes and spun. :)

Easy run w/ Sarah around E'town...was super snowy and sluggish...but we had some fun! :) Glad to at least get in some miles considering the weather.

Snowshoe hike w/ Sarah around Mt. Tom - we broke trail for about half the hike. Went up and over Goat Peak and around the snowy wonderland. :) At times we were over our knees in snow...what fun!!!

We just kept gabbing and tacked on a few more miles then I thought we were going to...but I also was just so tired and out of it that I wasn't a great conversationalist or anything. Oh well - the calm before the storm - so I wanted to get in what I could before I have to work for the next many hours...

Did early morning run w/ Abby and Laura - Abby wanted to do workout ('slow' by her terms...not slow at all!), so we warmed up just over 1 mile, then did 400, 800, 400, 800, 400, 800, 400 around a neighborhood, so there were ups and downs. I don't know the pace, but it felt pretty swift. Cooled down and tacked on a few extra miles with Laura.

Easy run w/ Sarah and Dana around Amherst. Felt good, nice to just stretch out hte legs. My right hamstring is super tight (happened halfway through this morning's workout with Abby), so I was happy to run easy and warm up the muscle. Hope it feels better soon.

Easy run around Amherst for just over an hour (with dusting of fresh snow on the ground...just enough to make things slick)...then I met up with the Amity Hill crew and did a few repeats with them before I headed to work. I'm so bummed that Donna and Dave bailed on the morning run, but they sure got me out of bed early to get in a longer run...so the motivation still worked out.

Erging class - tough one! Did 15 min on/5 min off...x 3. I wasn't feeling it last night and didn't seem to have much power, but at least I got in a good long erg.

Running (Indoor Track Workout) 1:10:00 [4] 9.0 mi (7:47 / mi)

Indoor track workout - redid the ladder (first workout of hte season) to see our improvement...and I felt great! Something clicked for me, and I was holding 6:00 or sub-6:00 pace for the entire workout! 400 - 1:30, 800 - 3:00, 1200 - 4:30, 1200 - 4:28, 800 - 2:55, 400 - 1:24. Recovery of 400m between each. I decided to really just go for it and not hold back, thinking about the next interval or anything...and it worked! What a breakthrough for me, I hope to keep it up, because I know I have it in me!

Easy run w/ Frank B. around Whiting Reservoir...we did one Mt. Tom climb, just to mix it up. Great to run with him. After my run, I felt naseaus for the rest of the night...don't know what's up...this happens, but mostly in the summer.

Erg class - felt hard, but I think because we were at a lower (20-24) rate, I just didn't feel like I had the power. Oh well...did 8 x 4 min on/1 min active rest, focusing on more power at a lower rate.

Easy walk w/ Steph around Amherst. Felt good to shake out the legs...

Running (Tempo run) 1:05:00 [3] 8.5 mi (7:39 / mi)

Did tempo run w/ Kelsey A...warned up several miles (from my house, to Sugarloaf, and around Town), then did 4.5 miles of informal tempo - no starting or stopping the watch, no idea where the mile markers are...just tried to keep the pace up and cruise through the route. Cooled down back to the house. Felt good to stretch out the stride a bit. My legs are mostly ok after the ski marathon, except for my hip flexors.

Cross country skiing (Classical) 4:10:00 [2] 50.0 km (5:00 / km)

Craftsbury Ski Marathon - did the ski marathon with my sister...bomber conditions and we had fun...my elbows and back were a bit sore even during the race, but the legs felt great! Glad to get out! Amazed at what Craftsbury did to be able to put on the race.

Running (Easy run w/ some track) 1:20:00 [3] 10.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Easy warmup around Noho with the girls, then we joined Rachel and her friend Alli at the Smith track for some (8?) 200m repeats. I don't have much turnover, so I ranged from 38-40 seconds and got my butt kicked - I did about 200 recovery (1 minute) between each. Then we ran the rest of the Noho loop around town. Was a fun little different run.

Erging (Erg class) 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 km (5:00 / km)

KILLER WORKOUT! Warmed up several kms, then did rowing ladder - 500m (@22), 750m (@24), 1000m (@26), 1500m (@26), 750m (@28), 500m (@30), 2 x 250m (open rate). Several minutes recovery between each. I kept trying to improve my pace each interval, so I was pretty tired at the end. I did get into the 1:40s for my 250s for the first time...that was awesome! I was so tired - especially after a running sprint workout in the morning, then an erg sprint workout in the afternoon!!!
