Event: Vermont 50
 

Running race (Ultra Trail Race) 8:18:30 [3] 50.0 mi (9:58 / mi)

Vermont 50 miler. With the struggled I've had on this course in my last 50 mile attempt (sadly, way back in 2009), I was all about being conservative and making sure I finished. I started off well, running smart, and only hit one rough patch between miles 20-30 (not the whole way), as it was getting super muddy, I was running alone at that point, and just lost my motivation for a bit. Luckily, I found company, the trails turned to windy single track, and I got my mojo back. Felt good the whole way, my legs aren't even feeling that bad after the fact, except for the sore hammies (which is typical). Anyway, finished with a solid time, but know I can easily do better with a bit more aggressive running out there. Oh, and the bonus was getting to win the women's race...nice surprise!

Easy run w/ Kelsey - ran around S. Deerfield for a while, up and over Sugarloaf, and around (barely) on the trails since it was pretty dark. Felt good - glad to take it easy.

Easy run w/ Nick and Brad around Mt. Norwottuck and Earl's Trails. Felt pretty tired, but while everything in my body is sore, it isn't really affecting the running so much. Still, trying to take it easy and be ready to kick butt at Vermont this weekend.

Ok, so I did a Spartan Race...it was rough! The running wasn't really running as much as bushwacking and hiking...and the obstacles kicked my butt and humbled me. But, it was a ton of fun and I would gladly do one again at some point in life...perhaps I would train better for it, however.

Easy run w/ Amanda and Sarah. It was crazy, so dark this morning, so we took our time and relaxed. :) Ran from E'town bike path, and thru E'town a bit - nice route.

Tempo run w/ Sarah. Ran from bowling alley up Rt. 9 - starting tempo in Florence and doing 20 min (@ 6:50 pace?) up to Look Park and down bike path. Recovered for a while, and then did bike path back towards runreg.com to get in another 10 minutes before we recovered back to the cars. Felt good - didn't realize we were running as fast as we were.

Plenty of walking to support Brian (and Ross) during the Pisgah 50k. It was disjointed hiking, but it was all I did since I'm allowing my body to heal from my infection. Hard to watch the race that I should be competing in, but I think I made the right decision with a long season in front of me and plenty of important races.

Running (Tempo run) 1:20:00 [3] 11.0 mi (7:16 / mi)

Tempo run w/ Sarah on Amherst bike path and AC trails. Warmed up for 2+ miles, then did 2 x 15 min tempo (around 6:50 pace) with plenty recovery between. Actually felt good and was much faster than we thought, we were aiming for mod/hard tempo but not killer, so we were both pleased with how it went (mostly conversational pace). Great run!

Easy run w/ Brian - ran to Sugarloaf, up and over, and back to the house on roads from the backside of the mountain. Felt ok, infection really hurts but at least I got in a few easy miles.

Easy long run w/ Brad around Notch/Batchelor Street trails. Felt good - was pleased that we kept a good pace and enjoyed the long run. Was a bit humid and was drenched by the end of the run.

Tempo progression run with Laura and Annie in Holyoke. Warmed up ~4 miles easy (7:45/mile) then turned down the pace for ~4 mile (7:06/mile), then turned down the pace for ~4 mile (6:53/mile). Honestly, I felt a bit flat/tired and struggled to stay with Laura and Annie for the 7 min/mile pace, think I just haven't eaten enough over the last few days. Oh well.

Track workout with Laura. Warmed up from her house to the Holyoke High track. Then, did 8 x 600 (at '5k race pace', so for me that was aiming for about 6:00/mile pace, or 2:15 +/-). 200 recovery easy between each. Did 2:19, 2:18, 2:17, 2:15, 2:14, 2:14, 2:14, 2:12. Felt hard but good - really felt the last one! Cooled down back up to Laura's house.

Wapack trail race - felt good but flat...was a bit sketched out on the downhills, so I just relaxed, enjoyed the race, and ran well on the ups and flats (taking the downhills easy). Was glad to chat with folks during the run and have a good 'racing' experience.

Easy long run w/ Annie - did a large loop around the Hampden Ponds area. Felt good, but really relaxed the tempo and enjoyed the miles.
