| Pink Ribbon 5k. 8am. Palos Heights on 127th St. Rented a Prius, and then took 25 minutes to figure out how to get it started. Turns out, you have to use exact starting sequence: key fob in, foot on brake, all auxilliary power off (radio, a/c, lights, fan - switch is located on the steering wheel, of all places) seat belts fastened, touch "POWER", await "Ready" light, shift into gear and press accelerator....and silent engine springs to life, and car starts moving.
Miss any of these, or do them in incorrect order (such as touch POWER switch before pressing brake pedal) and the thing just sits there. At the race, I parked next to another old guy driving a rented Prius...he'd taken half an hour to get his started. Very bad. We both almost lost the race...before we even got there. Sari did race too. Beautiful late spring morning. But my legs had no zip, after 2 days on the bike. Slowest 5k yet.

| Biking-Road 4:05:00 [4]51.0 mi (4:48 / mi) +450m 2:54 / km | ||

| Algonquin, IL. Nice restful sleep at a new B&B right off the Fox River bike path. Lots of violent weather overnight...floods along Fox River, Mississippi and all of Iowa. But we slept snug and dry.
Pushed off from B&B and rode east through Barrington Hills, Inverness, Barrington. Hit Donlea Road...abandoned paved road right through the middle of Spring Creek Forest Preserve...a surreal experience, floating along amidst lush spring vegetation right after heavy rains, heavily forested, twigs and debris crunching under our narrow wheels. We've got to get a map of this area! But then several hours of suburban biking, back to the SE toward home: Palatine, Arlington Heights, lunch in Rolling Meadows at "TNT" diner, Mt Prospect and then Central Av to the DesPlaines River bike path. Now this is a rugged biking experience: crushed limestone, not packed; got to carry your bike over rail crossings that appear in the middle of the forest, sudden encounters with very busy cross streets, and then the path deteriorated to just mud. Later. We bailed to NW Hwy into Park Ridge, crossed I-90 into Chicago, and rode familiar city streets home.

| Biking-Road 4:25:00 [4]66.0 mi (4:01 / mi) +550m 2:26 / km | ||
| Bike ride with Sari out to Algonquin, IL. Left at 5:45am, riding through Bucktown and the west side to Oak Park and the Prairie Path (crushed limestone) west to breakfast in Glen Ellyn. Then continue west to St Charles, where we picked up the Fox River Bike Path (paved). Stopped for beers in Geneva, St Charles, Elgin and Dundee, and rolled (!) into our Algonquin B&B about 6pm...in the grand RAGBRAI touring tradition. | ||
