NordicTrak 10:00 [3]

Erg rowing 24:23 [3] 5.0 km (4:53 / km)

Loosen up from yesterday. Feeling pretty sore throughout piece. I guess when you get older, you just lose your resiliency. And muscles that are torn down don't repair the same way as they did when younger.

NordicTrak 10:00 [3]

Erg rowing 8:42 [5] 2.0 km (4:21 / km)

Took 32 seconds off my seaon's PR for 2000m. Still way behind Charlie and my times last season. But quite happy that I was able to pull at this faster pace for so long. So I gave myself the rest of Sunday off.

Note: Went to see Spike Lee's new movie Chi-Raq yesterday. What a gross mess. Definitely not recommended if you're looking for any intelligent commentary on race relations in Chicago. Cartoon characters in a fantasy setting; certainly not Chicagoans in Chicago.

Erg rowing 23:53 [4] 5.0 km (4:47 / km)

This competes a six-week block of daily rowing. Didn't miss a single day! A nice rowing base. Back is still tender. But I think I'll begin doing a day or two each week of intervals and speed work.

I noticed that as of today's piece, I've passed the 3 million meter mark in total distance logged. If I add in the pieces I rowed on the earlier model of the Concept II in the gym during the 1980's and '90's I probably have over 4 million meters. It was my favorite machine out of the dozens in the club.

But that was at the dawn of the Internet Age; no on-line records exist. Instead we all logged our workouts in little cardboard folders stored in big boxes at the health club down the block. I must have been a member there for 20 years, at an annual cost of $1000 or more. Finally dropped out around 2005 or so.

And around 2007 Soupbone gifted me with his Nordic Trak machine; I think Ms Soupbone got tired of seeing it in front of the living room TV. And I bought a Concept II, Model E to create a little gym in my own basement. Much more accessible and efficient than going over to the health club. But not as much 'eye candy.' :-)

Best 5k time this fall. Feeling stronger. 18-holes of golf in the chill winds for the past three mornings. Lots of fun on three different courses, in three different parts of the City: South, Southwest and Northwest.

Not one of the couple dozen buses and elevated and suburban trains I took during that time were not on schedule. Very important when you're out in the blue-collar boonies on Sunday afternoon, with the sun setting, the temps dropping and the wind howling...and you're dressed only in golf finery. Chicago's transit system is excellent!

Note: Chicago is one of the great American cities, with the emphasis on CITY. It is not a collection of suburbs like LA, Atlanta or Detroit, around a burned-out urban core. One of the reasons Chicago is great is its police department....they're very tough. No matter the color of your skin, you quickly learn not to ignore, disrespect or disobey the Chicago Police.

Now with the spectre of terrorist bombings in our cities a reality, this is no time for watering-down our city police departments. While I certainly do not wish for a 'police state,' I hope the Chicago Police continue to come down hard on folks who are stupid enough to flaunt the law in this city.
