Chicago Indoor Rowing Championships Very apprehensive. Not sure I've really put much work into training for this event, the sole rowing event of the season, despite Charlie's helpful coaching.
Our start was one of the first of the day, and was delayed 45 minutes because of software problems with the linked machines. Very sophisticated....if it works! We should be able to see a replay of our heat on-line in a day or two. Not too exciting since all the other guys in my heat were a lot younger....and a lot faster. Two uniformed paramedics were following me around with one of those ambulance gurneys, and sat nearby like two vultures, watching me carefully as I rowed, waiting to grab the gurney and spring into action I guess.
As expected, I was DFL on the big Jumbotron overhead, still rowing a minute or so after everyone else was in. But that's ok; my time still should be good enough to take over the #1 spot for rowing records for the 75-79 age group in NE Illinois.
Started out very conservatively, trying keep pace in the 2:12 - 2:14 range. Didn't want to run out of gas, as I have before. But I waited too long to kick on the afterburners and get my pace down around 2:00. Finished with a burst at 1:56, but not completely spent at the end. I was satisfied with my 8:44.4 time...but not thrilled since it was still 1.6 seconds slower than my 2k time in December which is my seasonal PR. And my PR the season before was 8:42.0. So with a bit less conservatism, I coulda woulda set a new 3-yr PR this morning with an 8:41 time.
