Downers Grove GC. The oldest 18-hole golf course in the US! Constructed in 1892 on a wooded rise near the Burlington Northern main line from Chicago to San Francisco. Unfortunately because of land issues, it quickly devolved into a 9-hole GC in 1895. And the Chicago Golf Club decamped to Wheaton, where it remains a private club today.

But the remainder is still a very nice GC. With some elevation on each hole, old-fashioned raised tees, lots of water and marsh, and still 3280yds, par 36, a stout 70.4/126 rating, despite a lot of residential infill and municipal development.

Haven't played since January 11 because of all the polar vortexes and blizzards sweeping through the midwest; it's been a tough winter. But the course was in good shape, and I hit most shots quite well...just couldn't putt. Actual time on the GC: 1:47. Early afternoon train back to the City and home by 2:30pm, feeling quite beaten up. I guess rowing in the basement just doesn't prepare one for real outdoor activity!

Tuesday Mar 26 #

NordicTrak 10:00 [3]

Erg rowing 1:00:00 [3] 12.1 km (4:58 / km)

First hour row in a couple of years. Not too bad. Faster pace by far than my 10k effort in early February. And completed the March Madness Challenge with 25 days of 5k or more in the month...missed only one day last week, when it was just too nice out not to run. Held the pace today pretty constant until the final 10 minutes:

2:30.0
2:29.8
2:30.0
2:31.8
2:24.5.......overall: 2:29.2

Monday Mar 25 #

NordicTrak 10:00 [3]

Erg rowing 24:26 [3] 5.0 km (4:53 / km)

Fastest 5k in a while. Felt pretty good. Tomorrow's my final 5k needed to complete the Challenge.
