Downers Grove GC
. The oldest 18-hole golf course in the US! Constructed in 1892 on a wooded rise near the Burlington Northern main line from Chicago to San Francisco. Unfortunately because of land issues, it quickly devolved into a 9-hole GC in 1895. And the Chicago Golf Club decamped to Wheaton, where it remains a private club today.
But the remainder is still a very nice GC. With some elevation on each hole, old-fashioned raised tees, lots of water and marsh, and still 3280yds, par 36, a stout 70.4/126 rating, despite a lot of residential infill and municipal development.
Haven't played since January 11 because of all the polar vortexes and blizzards sweeping through the midwest; it's been a tough winter. But the course was in good shape, and I hit most shots quite well...just couldn't putt. Actual time on the GC: 1:47. Early afternoon train back to the City and home by 2:30pm, feeling quite beaten up. I guess rowing in the basement just doesn't prepare one for real outdoor activity!
