Orienteering - Event (Troll Cup Blue 2) 1:55:00 [5]8.48 km (13:34 / km) +480m 10:34 / km
spiked:8/13c
Better day today, not cramping at the end, better route choices, but still blew a couple of controls including a big time bomb on #9. Slow, but a good day out in the woods. Glad I opted for Blue

Orienteering - Event (Troll Cup Blue 1) 2:01:04 [5]8.62 mi (14:03 / mi) +470m 7:28 / km
spiked:12/18c
See race description - a long, hard day on my own map - which didn't really mean much except I know my mapping style. But I still managed to run into the green knowing full well I shouldn't.

Visibility really sucked so the going was slow and a lot of people had trouble with that. If the leaves were down, I think people's times would have been much faster and there would not have been as many errors if you could have seen further in the terrain. But I warned people of that in the meet notes but did not realize how bad it would be until I too was out there. I haven't been in the woods since June and most of the Day 1 terrain was back before the leaves were out.

Gym (5k) 22:14 [4]5 km (4:27 / km)
ahr:154 max:179 (sick)
New treadmills at the gym, have a 5k option with continuous HR readout, also have sub-max fitness test built in.

Ran the 5k adjusting speed to keep HR just under 160, ran the last 500m full out.
Note
Cold is slowly going away, but still have crap in my chest and a bit of sinus congestion.
Gym (sub-max fitness test) 14:29 [2]1.3 km (11:08 / km)
ahr:107 max:124 (sick)
Tried out the sub max fitness test - 3.4mph, incrementing 1% slope per minute to 12%. Not sure how it claims to derive a VO2 value from heart rate, but I suppose I could use it as a relative measure. Today's VO2 = 59.3
Gym (warmup) 4:23 [3]0.8 km (5:29 / km)
(sick)
two laps warmup on treadmill

Note
Looking over the maps and routes of Peter & Boris and realizing I am wasting far too much time navigating the straighter route. Need to focus on finding the cleaner, faster paths. Even legs where I navigated cleanly and felt I was reasonably fast, those that went wide via trails beat me handily..

Also was good to follow Peter a bit in the Relay - not so much blind following as keeping him in sight and noting his route choices - only on one leg did my slightly straighter route yield a faster time - but I also dropped in and out of a reentrant that Peter went high on so it was likely not better route, but just at that point I may have been running harder than Peter.

Orienteering - Event (Relay Champs Green) 51:09 [5]4.68 km (10:56 / km) +195m 9:03 / km
spiked:9/13c (sick)
US Relay Champs - 4 Point Team - Owen's Express - Jon Morse (OR), Dennis Struble (BR), Clint Morse (GR), Tim Parsons (RE). A decent run for me with a couple route choice errors, a couple hesistation errors, the last 3 controls my glasses fogged to the useless point and I ran pretty blind. Deducting my errors, I otherwise ran about 9.5 min per kilometer. If I was healthier, perhaps it would have been more like 8.5-9 min/km.

Saturday Sep 21

Orienteering - Event (GMOC Red (partial)) 1:08:52 [3]4 km (17:13 / km)
(sick)
Ran Red, but had an Asthma attack around the 3rd control. Couldn't run, hard to focus on navigation. Sat down for a spell to recover between 4 & 5 and realized the slopes were steeper than mapped and in fact, I wasn't even on the map anymore.

Kept going at a wheezing walk, drifting a bit on controls but getting through #9 and deciding that although I could finish at a walk, I really needed to get back in to help at the Finish, so I opted to DNF and jog the trails back in. Seeing the more open woods on the west side on Sunday, I probably could have continued and finished in reasonably good shape had I continued, but after thrashing miserably on the east side for over an hour, I had given up... The woods (and asthma) had beaten me today...

Tuesday Sep 17

Road / Trail Mix
(sick) (rest day)
The cold that won't go away. Busy schedule and really couldn't motivate myself to go out today since I can barely breath. Hope this clears up by Saturday..

Monday Sep 16

Road / Trail Mix (Lake & Back) 26:54 [3]6.1 km (4:25 / km)
(sick)
Out to the snip and back - mix paved / dirt road. Running in the dark using headlamp only when cars approached and on section of road with lots of potholes (don't need a turned ankle)
70ish, with humidity to match - near 100% dew point - fog just hanging on the glasses.
Just under 13 minutes out, just under 14 minutes back. Find it easier to push in the dark with no distractions....

Sunday Sep 15

Orienteering - Event (NEOC - Wadsworth Green) 56:46 [4]5 km (11:21 / km)
spiked:7/11c (sick)
See racing - still have a nasty cold, but it was good to get out. Lack of black features caused some trepidations, but overall a good run.... Hit many of the controls w/ sub 10min/km legs.

Saturday Sep 14

Orienteering - Event
(sick)
Been sick most of the week, was kind of thinking of going to Surebridge today, but woke up feeling horrible, did nothing productive. Hopefully get to Wadsworth Falls tomorrow even though it will just be a round of beginner courses

Sunday Sep 8

Orienteering - Event (Canoe O) 45:00 [3]
Went out on canoe-O with Anna(5) & Jackson(3). I was doing all the work of course - had to back the canoe in to punch the controls, had to beach the boat and make a 'potty stop' for Jackson. But it was fun and a good upper body workout... Great weather for the weekend.
Orienteering - Event (Pawtuckaway - Red Day 2) 1:17:39 [5]6.2 km (12:31 / km)
17c
Opted for Red today. The first 4-5 controls felt sluggish, a little hesitancy in the circle although navigation between the circles was good. The complex terrain from 6-13 had me initially wanting to just walk and pace count, but once into that area I found myself alternating between careful map reading/pace counting and brief bursts of speed (20-30 paces at a clip) which actually made that section go quickly and without incident - spiked everything in that area. Toward the end of the complex area I was in a small group and wanted to get away from the crowd so I bolted away toward the small pond - getting hung up in some blowdown crap temporarily, but then moving very fast and accurately for the remainder of the course.

Winner 1:02:04 (Gagarin), my time good for 10th

Red Day 2 - Splits

Saturday Sep 7

Orienteering - Event (Pawtuckaway - Blue Day 1) 1:57:34 [4]8.3 km (14:10 / km)
spiked:8/20c
No orienteering in a long while - decided to push myself and went out on Blue. Not a bad run, had a few minor problems mostly less than ideal routes or getting into the circle and briefly hunting, didn't feel particularly 'fast' but still felt good on the latter part of the course when I actually expected to be completely spent.

Winning Time - 1:09:16 (Hawkins) 2nd 1:23:25 (Alar) & J-J at 1:34:18. My time good for 13th

Blue Day 1 - Splits

Tuesday Sep 3

Gym (cooldown) 3:30 [2]0.4 km (8:45 / km)
ahr:128 max:140
cooldown
Gym (flat 3.25m) 23:36 [4]5.23 km (4:31 / km)
ahr:153 max:168
Only treadmill available was a crappy LifeFitness, so I just opted for brisk flat run. Intended to do 5 miles, but time got short and I had to get back to work for an appointment.

Monday Sep 2

Gym (rolling hills) 30:00 [4]6.85 km (4:23 / km)
ahr:150 max:184
8 sets of rolling hills, then fast slight downhill to 30 minute mark.
Gym (cooldown) 11:08 [2]1.2 km (9:17 / km)
ahr:130
walked at 4mph until reached 5 miles total.
