Bike - Road 57:53 [3]23.5 km (2:28 / km)
rhr:43 slept:8.5 weight:169lbs shoes: Cannondale ST1000
casual ride in early afternoon. Only had an hour or so (had to be back for bus time). SLR > Mtn Springs > Loehr > East St > Mountain St > around lake and home.... felt labored for first 10-15 minutes, then loosened up and felt reasonably fast without much effort...

Bike - Road (commute) 50:00 [3]20 km (2:30 / km)
rhr:46 slept:4.0 weight:170lbs shoes: Cannondale ST1000
another nice commute in the dark. 40F, dark all the way in, no hint of dawn even after getting up to the office after turning on lights in TLS. Clothing/comfort were just fine for 40F and dry - med bergelene, bike shirt (not really necessary, but wore it as an alt layer in the PM), light fleece and wind shell. Regular tights on bottom. Legs slightly chilled until first hill.
Bike - Road (commute) 45:00 [3]20 km (2:15 / km)
shoes: Cannondale ST1000
running late so a brisk ride home in late afternoon

Sunday Oct 22

Road Run (Webster) 45:00 [3]7.85 km (5:44 / km) +140m 5:16 / km
rhr:51 slept:6.0 shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Had a little time in the AM, so snuck out the door for a quick road run up Webster and back. Felt pretty good going up the hill but feeling pretty tired by about 20 minutes or so. Slow jog for about 5, then most of the way back did utility pole intervals - ran full out for one pole, then walked the next one - occasionally ran two poles (they aren't uniformly spaced). The legs felt great, its the cardiovascular capacity thats really hurting these days...

Bike - Road (commute) 1:05:00 [3]25 km (2:36 / km)
rhr:53 slept:8.0 weight:170lbs shoes: Cannondale ST1000
drizzly, patchy fog. first commute entirely in the dark. First 40 minutes or so all I could see was what was in the beam of the headlight, after that I could dimly percieve things along the sides of the road. Nice thing about riding back roads at that time of day is I could just take the middle of the road for myself and knew well in advance of any oncoming cars and could pull back to the side before they got to me... The only annoyance was the occassional house with HID lights blaring all night - really irritating to get used to the darkness to have all that light spoil the peacefulness of rolling along - and for no good reason either...
Bike - Road (commute) 45:00 [3]20 km (2:15 / km)
shoes: Cannondale ST1000
ran late at work, so home via the direct route - fighting traffic on 195.....

Monday Oct 16

Bike - Road 20:00 [3]7 km (2:51 / km)
shoes: Trail-a-bike
out to the lake with Hayden on a nice afternoon. Two 10 minute rides separated by quite a bit of playing along the receded shoreline...

Friday Oct 13

Bike - Road (Vernon Rail-Trail) 25:00 [3]5.0 mi (4:59 / mi)
rhr:50 slept:8.0 weight:168lbs shoes: Trail-a-bike
pm ride w/ Hayden - from church street intending to go to 384 underpass, but Haydens hands were cold so turned back early.

Thursday Oct 12

Bike - Road (commute) 45:00 [3]20 km (2:15 / km)
rhr:50 slept:8.0 weight:169lbs shoes: Cannondale ST1000
Rained overnight, but forecast was for only chance of showers this AM - and as I couldn't hear rain running down the gutters, I dressed early and hit the road with the new headlamp that came in yesterday.

I've had J-J's hatlamp directions sitting around for most of the year, but hadn't yet managed to scrounge all the requisite surplus parts (notably the Li-Ion cells). And then I figured if I was going to purchase materials, I might as well purchase a well-made lamp that could serve multiple purposes. I'm all for quick & dirty (and cheap), but I also need reliability for commuting in the dark.

I wound up getting a 3W LED headlamp made by Dinotte - runs 2-3 hours on NiMH rechargeable AA's - it was fairly expensive based purely on wattage and/or run-time. But the thing is super tiny, super light and the mounting system uses rubber o-rings - I can swap it from helmet to handlebars (and eventually a hat) in like 15 seconds. AA NiMH are cheap and readily available so having a spare pair in my pocket won't weigh me down.

The thing is really bright - fairly tight spot out to about 30 feet (which is about as far as I need for my normal riding pace), being helmet mounted I can easily point it at drivers at intersections to make sure they know I'm there and the battery pack sits nicely in my jersey pocket.

I thought that riding in the dark with the light I'd be a bit slower, but even on wet, leaf covered roads (with more than a few acorns as well) I still covered the direct route in 45 minutes..

Now that I have the light, I'll start going in even a bit earlier to beat the early commuters and have the roads mostly to myself in the dark... that'll be really nice...

New panniers coming in today (so I can carry more clothing now that we're into fall - up until now everything has been jammed into my fanny pack (and strapped to the outside of it) but my lower back has been quite sore with all that crap hanging there. The bike has full set of racks, about time I made use of them (my former panniers disintegrated years ago...)
Bike - Road (commute) 1:00:00 [3]25 km (2:24 / km)
shoes: Cannondale ST1000
nice ride home, sun trying to break out, high 60's. Fairly easy overall effort but got home and realized I never shifted down to the small ring on the hills. Legs must be getting stronger...

Tuesday Oct 10

Bike - Road (commute) 45:00 [3]20 km (2:15 / km)
rhr:47 slept:8.5 weight:169lbs shoes: Cannondale ST1000
managed to get a commute in this AM. Going to order some lights this afternoon. Started when I could barely see pavement, but 15 minutes later things were pretty good. Got to work a half hour later than usual, but no one else there anyway so who cares? As long as I get showered and moving before the rest of the staff gets in...

Nice morning - chilly to start, but that only lasts until the climb up bald hill..
Bike - Road (commute) 1:00:00 [3]25 km (2:24 / km)
shoes: Cannondale ST1000
usual route home - nice afternoon, slightly overdressed, not a lot of energy overall but time still steady at an hour...

Sunday Oct 8

Hiking (Metacomet) 2:00:00 [1]
shoes: Kumasi GTX
Nice hike with the family. Metacomet N from Rt 20 in East Granby, up above Newgate. Actually out for 3 hours, but with various stops and breaks it was probably about 2 hours walking...

Saturday Oct 7

Road / Trail Mix (Cider Mile) 13:00 [1]1.6 km (8:07 / km)
rhr:50 slept:8.5 weight:169lbs shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Ran Cider Mile kids race w/ Hayden - slow jog & walking. Jackson and Anna running too, but I was sticking alongside Hayden giving encouragement.

Would have been a nice day to run the 5k

Monday Oct 2

Bike - Road (lake & back) 22:00 [3]7 km (3:09 / km)
rhr:47 weight:170lbs shoes: Trail-a-bike
out to lake w/ Hayden, hung for a while watching herons & (I think) two great egrets...

nice day to hang by lake, then home...

Sunday Oct 1

Event: WCOC Trout Brook Valley

Trail Run - Tempo (Shafran) 59:17 [3]10 km (5:56 / km)
rhr:46 slept:8.5 weight:169lbs shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Tried to sneak a run in between heavier bands of rain. Ran two hard loops (2.5km approximately) in 9:56, 9:37 respecively. First time under 10 minutes, surprising as there were many puddles (avoided most) and had to slow substantially in places like bridges and such. But I've only run this loop a few times so far.

Top of thighs were quite dead on the final cooldown loop and the trails back home. Walked a few stretches because my legs just didn't feel like running...
