Bike - MTN (Lake and back) 20:00 [3]6.5 km (3:05 / km)
shoes: Trail-a-bike
Afternoon ride out to the lake and back with Hayden on the Trail-a-bike... Kind of warm and my lower back really doesn't like the mountain bike anymore. Unless I figure out a way to hitch it to the 'bent, I don't think we'll be doing any long trail-a-bike rides.

Orienteering - Training (Sprint A) 35:00 [3]2.5 km (14:00 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Test running Sprint A with Bruce Giguere - a running friend who hasn't previously done any O. I kind of talked him through the legs while reviewing the map for any tweaks. Pretty good. A good portion of the time was standing still explaining various concepts and discussing the pros/cons of various route choices.
Orienteering - Training (White) 9:04 [3]1.7 km (5:20 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Had a few minutes left before heading to UConn for a late afternoon meeting, so I zipped around the white course - a fine excursion...
Orienteering - Training (streamering) 39:40 [3]3.8 km (10:26 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Ran around and streamered controls with actual bag numbers. Ran a lot of the controls intentionally from different directions than course legs would provide to ensure things are accurate. Everything where it should be. Ran across one rock face that missed the map and added that and tweaked one trail intersection a bit.
Orienteering - Training (Sprint B) 20:11 [3]3.25 km (6:13 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Ran Sprint B at a moderate pace - distance is actual, not course distance. Wasn't running with a compass and made a couple drifting errors for about 2 minutes errors - everything else was pretty good.
Fieldwork (Crandalls) 2:15:00 [1]
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Some more field work - mostly touching up rough edges, adding some detail in a couple areas I had glossed over previously. Adding in a new sidewalk they are getting ready to pour etc... Had the computer with me so also did some onsite drafting of updates & tweaks directly into OCAD, but didn't include that time. All in all a fine day to be in the woods...

Fieldwork (Crandalls) 3:00:00 [1]
A combination of touch up field work and some control checking for courses. Nice day in the woods...
Note
Picked up the meet gear from JHen at Crandalls today. Got home to sort flags and figure out what numbers I had to work with. The SI units appear to be sequential from 31 to 46 plus the start/clear/finish. Guess what numbers I had already assigned to the sprint controls as I was roughing out courses in OCAD? 31 to 46... Spooky...

Note
While exchanging meet controls with Jim this afternoon we were also talking Billygoat (what else?). The subject of Stephen's brief reign as youngest finisher came up and one thing leading to another and Jim asked me how old Jackson was (currently 8) with an evil gleam in his eye.

So this evening over dinner (homemade pizza sumption BTW) I brought the subject up and Jackson sounded really pumped to do the '08 Billygoat. He had a pretty good race at Soapstone on Sunday (4 mile trail race) finishing under an hour but I know a fair portion of that he was walking with Anna. Once I ran back out on the course to catch up with them, he took off heading up woodchuck hill at a pace that probably wasn't a lot slower than I had run it - and I probably set a PR on the course Sunday.

If I'm navigating, I have a sneaking suspicion that he should be able to finish comfortably under 3.5 hours.

Bike - MTN (Trail-a-bike) 15:00 [2]1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Trail-a-bike
Hayden wanted to go for a ride on the 'three wheeler', so I hooked the trail-a-bike up to the mountain bike and we did a short ride down on the dirt road and back. First climbing up on the mtn bike it felt really wierd with the seat so much higher than the bent and within those 15 minutes of riding all the reasons I went bent in the first place came back to me - lower back was getting sore and that saddle up my butt really wasn't all that pleasant.
Bike - 'bent (goofing around) 20:00 [3]
shoes: Slipstream
Tried readjusting the seat for a slightly more reclined angle - I had been riding it pretty upright, but it just didn't feel right. not really uncomfortable, but I was looking for more. The more reclined angle felt really good while riding with more weight distributed on the back but stopping without sitting forward is definitely on the toes only. I'd prefer to stop flatfooted and remain reclined. Not a big issue, just one I'll have to get used to I guess. TIme is just a rough guess tooling around the driveway and road in front of the house.. Will have to wait for a longer ride to really evaluate the new position.

Trail Run - Tempo race (Soapstone Sampler) 27:28 [5]6.1 km (4:30 / km) +100m 4:10 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Cool, light rain. Ran sampler w/ Jackson and Anna - due to handicapped starts, they went off before me and we all agreed that we would run our own races rather than run together. So I actually raced the course - with the goal of not getting passed by any faster runners starting after me. (I had a 1:58 lead over scratch runners due to my advancing years). Ran well, only passed by one person but couldn't quite catch the 3rd place finisher in the field leading to the finish. Settled for 4th overall. Still, I think that this is a new PR for the sampler course which I've run well over a hundred times over the years. Wish I were faster though..
Run w/ Jackson (Sampler redux) 30:00 [3]3 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI
Jogged back out on the course after finishing to see where Anna and Jackson were - they were on the climb up woodchuck and walking together. I stayed with Anna and Jackson took off running - apparently running the entire remainder of the course - said he passed 5 or 6 people on the way back in - probably a good confidence booster for him. I walked the rest of the course with Anna who didn't have any more running in her.
Trainer (garage) 20:00 [3]6 km (3:20 / km)
shoes: Slipstream
Hayden wanted to ride his bike in the driveway, so I lugged the trainer up from the basement and set it up in the garage and read some more of Barefoot Sisters that I started in February and never finished. Legs kind of tight from this mornings effort so I just kind of spun at a leisurely rate...

Saturday May 19

Event: Billygoat

Note
Rainy crappy day, so I got caught up on drafting today. Looks like Mon-Thur next week should be nice so I hope to finish up the portions of the map that will be used for the June 10th meet.
