| Looking back at Routegadget maps (I never got my Long map back) I now realize what I did to mp on Monday. Controls 10,11&12 were pretty close together in a straight line. 10 was fine, but then partway to #11 things didn't feel right, I slowed down, checked the map and looked around and looking back to my right things seemed to make sense and I saw a bag so I jogged over to verify and lo and behold #61 was indeed on my description sheet. What I failed to notice, coming in from a different direction, is that this was actually #10 that I had already punched. But I mistakenly assumed it was 11, then headed off to #12, which in retrospect seemed to take a little longer to get to than I was expecting, but I didnt put the pieces together. So I apparently visited #10 twice in a row and then indeed didn't go to #11, passing below it looking for #12 lower on the slope. Ah well, it was a fun weekend anyway... | ||

| Well, the card says I mispunched #11. But it was a great race. Controls #2 & #3 were quite tentative as I had a bit of a time reading the trails correctly, but then settled down and mostly ignored minor trails. Didn't question it at download as I had to get back to go out with Jackson on his course, but looking at the map afterwards, I know I went to #11 and verified the correct control # because I went via a nearby control that I knew wasn't mine (the fire ring photo in the meet notes). But I guess the box didn't beep (can't recall that specifically) And my leg to #12 from there was just fine. I have no doubt in my mind that I went there, so I'm counting this as a full race here on Attackpoint. | ||

| Shadowing Jackson on his first official 'A' meet course. After noon by the time he went out and quite warm. Did very well for the first half, then had an error on #7 and I assisted him a bit as he was getting very discouraged. Then ok for a couple more and another need for assistance.
Overall he did quite well, considering the heat was bothering him and it was a long white course. Had the result changed from 'A' course to 'Rec' course due to my minor assistance. He enjoyed the whole weekend, but I think he'll stick with Rec courses a bit longer until he builds up his confidence more and ability to correct the errors without getting frustrated so easily. AOWN - Enroute to #6 (which was at Saturdays first callup line location) - I stopped Jackson and pointed directly ahead down the road. He quickly chided me for assisting as it turns out I was also pointing at the flag (which I hadn't previously noted) but instead at a young deer coming over the embankment about 10 meters in front of us (which Jackson hadn't seen) and then proceeded to cross the road in front of us and head up into the woods. | ||

| Orienteering - Training (Model Event) 45:00 [2]*** | ||
| shoes: Salomon TR2 | ||
| Walked / jogged the model event at Hickory Run with Jackson. AOWN - found a really large bear scat and a deer skull.... 9 year olds love that stuff... | ||
| Orienteering - Event race (Middle Distance RedX) 50:24 [5]*** 4.3 km (11:43 / km) +160m 9:53 / km | ||

| Errors on #1 & #2 probably worth 7-8 minutes, then settled down and navigated more slowly and tentatively but pretty clean the rest of the way. Only other error was on the long leg from 9-10 I didn't notice the trail across the bridge and misread it as a form line at the top of the slope - so I opted to do my climbing on the road, running back through the start callup area, then cutting across the stream and up the hill to avoid a long leg in light green. Executed my route perfectly, but in retrospect that trail probably would have saved me a couple minutes. Middle of the pack today... | ||
| Orienteering - Training (Middle Distance White) 29:31 [3]1.7 km (17:22 / km) +40m 15:32 / km | ||

| Shadowing Jackson on white. Another good outing for him, including a number of off trail legs - 2 by design, one by Jacksons choice. The latter would have been fast going around on trail, but he learned that the hard way. One major error heading down the wrong trail to #7, I let him go about 2 minutes before telling him to stop, read the map and figure out where he was. Back to #6 we went and then ok from there... | ||

| Event: US Team Trials | ||
| Orienteering - Training (Sprint Model) 40:00 [1]*** | ||
| shoes: Salomon TR2 | ||
| Walked / jogged the Mountaintop campus model event with Jackson upon arriving in Bethlehem. | ||
| Road Run warm up/down 40:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Salomon TR2 | ||
| Walk to the start - once for my course, then again with Jackson. I jogged most of it for mine, walked with Jackson. Lots O climb... | ||
| Orienteering - Event race (Lehigh Sprint Red) 23:58 [5]*** 3.1 km (7:44 / km) +58m 7:04 / km | ||
| shoes: Salomon TR2 | ||
Good race, awesome venue. One hesitation came down a slope at an angle to avoid mulched bed (wasn't green though) and ended up a bit west of where I wanted to be, couldn't make sense of the vegetation (white vs open), then turned around and saw flag right behind me - 20s lost there. A few other spots where my route wasn't the optimum (based upon post race reading of the map), but I chose my routes and executed them well. 1st place M45 and hopefully worth some decent sprint points..

| Shadowing Jackson on Rec White Sprint. I really liked the fact that DVOA made the rec courses use the same course, and the competitors got to be part of the same system - call up lines, e-punching, download - the whole works. It really gave Jackson the full A-meet experience. he had a great time and did really well with only very mimimal coaching on my part. | ||
