Control checking & wakeup. So a bit more careful & tentative navigation to make sure I was in the right spot. Carried an extra SI unit with stand in for #1. Missed #5, slightly above correct reentrant which was obscured by vegetation, had to backtrack slightly. No skips since I needed to verify all controls. #13 was in wrong reentrant so fixed that. And back from first loop in time for some photo duties. Nice course..

After filming pre-start & start, grabbed a spare e-stick from Melissa and ventured out to check 2nd half of long Hustle. Figure I probably had a 25-30 minute head start on the fast guys. A little pokey when I first started as I hadn't decided whether to do them in order, or score-o fashion to cut the distance. After a couple minutes of indecision and slow jogging away from start, elected to just go for the long leg to 14 and do them in order. No issues other than wakeup delay an rehanging #17 which had fallen to the ground. Made it around and back about 5 minutes before Jan L cruised in, so met my goal of beating them back. No splits since there was no download up when I finished the first loop - aka short Hustle- so opted not to use my stick. And the one I borrowed wasn't cleared, check nor officially start. But woke up boxes just dandy.

Legs tired, didn't run much. Rolling the start & pre-start stuff in here as well

Well, that was unexpected. First time orienteering in Sonoran desert terrain. Lots of pointy things, blood was drawn. My UV sun sleeves are now white with many reddish brown spots. Took me a few controls to determine what was runnable and what was not. Light green vegetation called for avoidance whenever possible. Sandy washes were free of pointy stuff but deep loose sand was very taxing to run in.
Clean run, some route choices modified by veg conditions, but always knew where I was. Slowed down a few times for cautious assessment.
Got around the course in a bit over 53 minutes. As usual (due to my photo duties) I started first, and finished first - nothing like having a target on your back. But no one else was able to come in under 61 minutes - so a win with a sizable 7+ minute margin over 2nd place.

Actually spent more time than this taking photos, but stopped watch when I was mostly hanging around finish.
Up early to catch plane to TUC via ATL. Almost missed connection as plane was boarding before I deplaned from BDL, and both gates were at the furthest end of two different terminals. Didn't quite run, but twas a very hasty walk. One person right behind me before they closed the door. At least I avoided the line.

Easy walk on Bridle Path > Nature Trail. Considered a trail run, but orienteering here in the AM, so gonna save it..
