Orienteering race (NAOC 8pt Club - Leg 1) 12:34 intensity: (15 @1) + (25 @2) + (1:24 @3) + (4:13 @4) + (6:17 @5) *** 1.93 km (6:30 / km) +51m 5:45 / km

Ran first leg on NEOC club team with Barb Bryant & Jon Campbell. Evalin took my camera while I was out. 6 controls, pretty straightforward, careful off the start to be sure of initial forking. Ran by and punched the wrong #1 just to be certain it wasn't mine - it was right on trail to no loss to pass by and check and then kept on going into green for my #1.

#2 was on back side of a medium green thicket and approaching the narrow bit I had to bash through I realized it was stinging nettle. But apparently I was too fast for it and emerged unscathed.

Longer leg to #3, took a wider L route than intended. Got into some undergrowth, but didn't slow me much, no loss in speed but extra distance and a stupid indecision probably cost 20-30 seconds.

#4 an easy spike, but gentle uphill had me running slower than I'd like to have run - altitude? 7 days cumulative fatigue?

More gentle uphill to #5, further around thicket than I expected, so maybe lost 5s on going R vs L

Across parking lot and up stairs (ughhh) into Northstar Village and kicked it hard to the final control and into arena for handoff to Barb.

Went straight to work on photos after retrieving camera from Evalin, so no idea where we placed in the club results. A fun day, but looking forward to tomorrow's rest day.

Two midweek NREs feel a bit anti-climactic after NAOC, but then heading into WRC on the weekend before headed eastward...

8th overall. Sergey V crushed this in 45 minutes. Lost some time on 1 & 4, minor corrections on 2 & 10. Major gaff on penultimate control - too many roads, got confused and off line.

Went into this knowing that relocation could be a challenge so vowed to temper the pace and stay in control all the way around. Not anticipating a stellar performance, but wanted to avoid any huge bungles.

As usual, had the first early start, 30 minutes before the regular window. Remote triangle, so punched the start and down the streamered route along road. Got to end of streamers, no start flag. Double checked terrain, yup this IS the triangle. Not good. Stopped watch and jogged back to start to advise about missing start flag. Cleared my stick and started again.

Off to #1 tentative and careful, trying to correct for deviations around Manzanita & such. After going about the right distance i realized I was a bit left of line in broad rentrant, backtracked a bit, then made another correction and in smoothly. Probably a 50-60s loss not accounting for tentative pacing.

#2 on end of a ride, but ignoring those as tricky to discern in the terrain. Mostly compass and carefully assessment of contours. Saw boulder to my left so a slight correction to my right. Basically a flag in the woods - had my code, didn't ascertain what the ride looked like

#3 mostly straight on contour keeping my eyes downslope for larger boulders on left of line. A minor shift to the R up slope as I entered circle but no time loss - feeling smooth and steady, but wary of getting over confident.

#4 another cross slope on contours and compass - through the Manzanita undergrowth, careful to balance L & R deviations. Saw large boulders upslope to R, another minor correction into circle x this time to L

#5 - longer leg - on compass to large boulder about 30%, over form line spur. Down broad spur, staying on top, passed a flag on a similar boulder, felt too early but drifted over to check code "just in case", maybe 15s out of the way. Then continued to my boulder -dead on.

#6 - another short cross slope leg - on compass looking a bit R and beyond for a larger boulder. Spotted it and looked L to my flag tucked away less than 10m

#7 - straight to road at water drop - didn't want water, but planned to use it as intermediate attack. Looked L & R. Saw no drop but kept on my line anyhow. Passed just R of large boulder/small boulder combo and straight into my small boulder. Not much left, feeling good. HR just where I wanted it on the cusp of 4/5.

#8 - turned left across broad rentrant keeping hilltop to my L and looking for multiple boulder clusters downslope. And trying to split the distance between the two. Buried in the Manzanita, but spiked it anyhow

#9 - straight as possible and pushing to the road, aiming for the bend. Hit it about 20m left for an easy spike and down the chute I went. First place!! Well, duh... no one else had finished yet. For that matter, back in 28 minutes, no one else had started yet either.

And out for a couple hours of photo taking in 90+ degree temps. Waited for runners in the shader bits before venturing into sunshine for pix.

But at the end of the day was sitting in 3rd M60 overall behind Tom Hollowell and, I think, a Norwegian. So looks like Silver medal podium to go with apparent Bronze from yesterday. And apparently ahead of Sergey V. No idea how that happened..

Got an email yesterday afternoon from IOF advisor that there would be no "early start nonsense". Well crap.. My main duty is event photography, so if I go out at end of start window my run doesn't count. Went up to the start 15 minutes early and managed to sneak into a spot with some start volunteers who hadn't gotten the memo. So out about 5m ahead official starts.

First 5 controls in a condo area with lots of artificial barrier tape. So no real route choice, just navigate around the correct bits of tape and punch, and then usually back out the way I came in. Felt pretty uninspired.

Enroute to #6 encountered a streamered rope under lift line, paused to double check map - no purple line so this one for the Mtn bikers and doesn't appear to us.

#7 & #8 through the village - I went wider R route - more distance, but less zig zaggy and fewer pedestrians - so able to run smoothly the entire way.

And a longish leg down the road to #9 and another heavily barriered condo group. Did not see the through building passage near #10 so definitely went the long way around on this one - probably 90-100s loss. I studied building before 10 for passage but not the one beyond. Dumb move..

#11 - didn't see the through building route to R of line and went wide L - could have saved 30-45s.

#12 ok, took the L route to #13, but in retro spect the R route faster due to fewer stairs. A quick glance they looked even and I just decided and executed. 20-30s

Next few fine but hit #15 and stopped my watch at 20 minutes thinking finish, but no, turn L & 20m to finish punch - manually added 14s. Didn't stop at #15, but if I hadn't slowed and rounded corner at full speed probably 10s.

So maybe 3 minutes of improvements I could have made, but at the end of the day looks like 4th M60 about 4 minutes behind Tom Hollowell, the Norwegian? and Sergey Velichko, who I expect to trounce me. So perhaps a Bronze podium?

Happy enough with the race, but wish I'd been able to read those gaps in buildings at speed.

Front 9 at Truckee Regional Park. First time using uDisk app. App map didn't match hole locations whatsoever. It was useful for finding the tees however. Lots of rocks (one fall/abrasion) and mucho sagebrush. Tip: don't bring a gray driver for sage. On most of the holes you could not see pin from tee, and each hole had 3 pin options (plus a 4th in the app). So basically chuck a disk in the right general direction and figure out where the pin is later. But don't throw too hard due to steep slope down to Truckee River, I didn't want to go looking for errant disks down there. But a good excuse for a walk. Nap time..

Considered doing the NAOC model - but pretty sure its the same small bit of junky woods the model was located at for 2021 - perhaps even the same control location. No need to drive out there.

My legs were toast, so I didn't chase anyone today - the few photos I took (200 or so) were all from the same vantage point - under an oak tree near the finish punch. Plus a (very) few candids.
