Night O' race 1:57:00 [4] **
spiked:16/24c shoes: Adidas Tri-Star Cleats ($35)
2 hour Night O'. I was working on my car longer than I expected, and then the interstate was backed up, so I arrived about 9:10pm. I was supposed to be there between 8 and 9 to register, and the race was supposed to start at 9pm. Luckily for me, it started about 8 minutes late---I think.
I changed quickly and put new batteries (I had just bought) into my 1w headlamp and 7.5w flashlight. I chose shorts because it was advertised as a trail-only event, with no bushwacking, although I found out that it wasn't really prohibited. All the placements were right off trails, so it only helped in a few areas.
I so wish I'd worn long pants. I got a few hits of stinging nettle and various other plants, insects, and mud on my legs.
Because I was late, and there were penalty points for taking longer than 2 hours, I didn't plan much, and I didn't allow for shortening the course.
As I was returning to the finish from the far point, I knew I was overtime, but I decided I didn't really care, and I got all 24 anyway.
I came in at 2:08:26, which means I was actually done in less than 2 hours, which was my goal. So w00t!
I've been sick, and it's been lingering for about 2 weeks, and today was the second day in a row that I felt good. Still some nasal drippage, but I ran about as much as I walked, which was awesome.
Because of the JWOC Podcast (The O' Show...), I dug out the Violent Femmes 2nd album (Hallowed Ground---1983 (?)) and listened to it in the car tonight. Man, that is one messed up album. It's schizophrenic---It's religious and anti-religious, tragic to the point of digusting but it's also kind of fun. It ranges from a sort of minimalist punk to credible country to at least one really neat jazz section. It's either the work of some very cool artsy people making a very strange statement about religion, or of some people with some serious emotional problems---the former, I hope.
