Camp Stem, actually "Stem Adventure Center, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Council" near Laconia, Indiana, maybe 45 minutes SW (!) of Louisville, KY. Short MTBO course set by Ken Kling. I caught up on sleep, arrived late, and offered to help pick up controls on the far side of the Camp. So this short course was point to point (order assigned by Ken).

First time ever doing MTBO. I'm used to slow and steady orienteering, and this was a real change. The speed is so much faster when flat or downhill, and I hesitated too much. One boom in the bottom right of the course. I went past my control, and had to go back a bit. Again, it's the speed difference.

MTBO Setting 1:46:30 intensity: (47:00 @3) + (54:54 @4) + (4:36 @5) 19.3 km (5:31 / km) +165m 5:18 / km

Got dropped off on the far side of the course, collected 4 (another was picked up by the driver, with my help), explored the gravel network (collecting GPS tracks), and rode back to the start on paved roads.

This area is basically jeep tracks armored with a mix of old and new gravel, so parts are just normal and parts are loose gravel that feels really scary with the wheels sort of carving and floating. In addition, there are lots of pipeline rides, some recent, which were all quite muddy because of a big rain Friday.

As a MTB noob, this was the first time I repeatedly had my rear tire spin on climbs. I started to get good at moving my weight rearward to plant the tire, but I did a bit of pushing when the mud was too loose.

I felt better on the climbs. It felt like I have improved a lot on fitness, but on the other hand, I was starting to cramp on the ride back. I didn't have a good "race day breakfast", so that might have been the problem. I'm a little worried about cramping after this much riding, but I also really need to plan some long rides.

Also, the east-west road at the top is "Mosquito Creek Rd" which is good to know.
