Gym Mayfield - Class Cycle 55:00 [3] 18.2 km (3:01 / km)

Lots of hills and sweat. Which will continue even more so in tonights Street-O around Kotara - hills and muggyness. Can only get more horrible if the storms come through and get soaked as well.

Won't be doing a 2nd run tonight as will be going out early (probably 4:30 pm prior to 5 pm start) so I can assist Mick K, in his first event as a course setter, at the finish desk.
5 PM

Orienteering - Street (#04 Kotara) 44:34 [5] 7.5 km (5:57 / km)
shoes: Sixty Dollar Slazengers

Distance from geodistance.

34 Controls for 62 points available.

Arrived at 3:45 pm with the intention of helping out first time setter Mick K. He had arrived only a few minutes before. All was ready to go by 4:30 pm and I was going to go out early so I could help out at Finish Desk.

I was the first runner out at 4:52 pm. This proved my undoing as it was so damn hot and humid. Even copped light sprinkle of rain for 10 minutes which made it worse. When I got back and lay in a heap on the ground helpful people brought me cups of water (most of which I poured over my head rather than drank but their concern was well noted) and I then lay under a water tap for several minutes. After two ice cold softdrinks started feeling better but took probably 20 minutes to get to this state.

Can't remember ever being personally this hot in a Street-O in 4 seasons. Thornton last year was 40 degrees but I was the setter so avoided it.

Mick had plenty of helpers so the early run wasn't needed and it cooled down a LOT for the later runners. Still hot but not as horrific.

Also in the two minutes thinking time no obvious route choice stood out so for the first time ever went out with NO markings on map at all and made it all up on the run. Headed North which is NOT where I wanted to go as overlapped the last time I ran this area. But South looked WAY too hilly.

My route was 18 Controls (1 x 6 and 2 x 10 and 3 x 2) for 32 points.
Controls were a long way apart today and you had to work hard for each one.
Came 20th.

Maximum score was 43 so 74.4%.

After 1C there was NO WAY I was going to climb 40 m and add 400 m of travel to get 3B in dead end.
3H was also a write-off as was not going to backtrack 800 m for that either.

Hesitated going for 1H and then ran west up the wrong street for about 15 m before deciding that this has cost me 30 seconds so I better go and get it now anyway.

Daniel Orr did the same km for 37 points, and from other peoples routes it looks like going South was the better option.

South
4.7 km on geodistance then work through the centre of map
3E-2N-1P-3G-1L-1M-2R-1N-2P-1K-3D-2H
22 points
Start with horrific steep hills / stairway 3E-2N-1P but after that nearly all downhill

North
5.3 km on deodistance then work through the centre of map
2K-1G-1E-2M-2C-2A-3A-2B-1A-2D-1D-1C-1H
21 points
Lots of up and down smaller hills

Mick K did a good job of ensuring placing controls EXACTLY correct on the map but had a few learnings from people about multiple interpretations of clues (which always happens). However all I will remember of today is the finish.
