Orienteering - Park (#01 Newcastle) 37:52 [3] 4.7 km (8:03 / km)
shoes: New Balance Nov 2013

Last 2 nights of less than 4 hrs sleep meant I was pretty stuffed.
Tried going home from work early prior to event to get 3 hrs but was not successful as just lay there.
So getting any result today was welcome.

No major screw-ups on any particular controls.
Jumping off the verandah over the fence to land on the ground at #1 wasn't a brilliant idea but no injuries.
Went the north track option from 9 to 10 rather than the back track east option that other people seemed to be taking. Was happy that until about Control 11 I wasn't really following, or being followed by anyone. From approx 16 to 22 Peter Charlton and I were neck and neck to each control despite some different route choices.

More happy to have clarified a few uncertainties about the final event
ie timing to be ready at 3 pm, course layout, sport ident vs punch cards for seniors and girl guides etc.
This was the main reason I attended today as I can't compete in the final anyway since I am the setter.
Still have to sort out actual control number availability.

Final Course still too basic, with limited route choices, for my liking but this has been governed by the huge amount of regrowth forcing runners to basically be forced to stay on tracks.

Orienteering - Park Planning (Walka Water Works) 2:20:00 [0]

Resetting the four Park-O Courses to take into account inpenetrable scrub.

Four Courses
1. Very Easy (Open for Seniors and Girl Guides)
2. Easy (Open for Seniors and Girl Guides)
3. Short (Final)
4. Long (Final)

At times have DELIBERATELY drawn the path I expect people to follow.
If they deviate off this through the scrub thats their problem.
For the Very Easy and Easy Courses have made the control lines match the pathways so people don't think they are forced to walk in straight lines.

Added in a butterfly loop involving 4 controls at one point on the Long Course to force people to have to come in and out the same way rather than fighting through the scrub. Similar loop on the Short but from south rather than the north.

Writing all the control descriptions.
Happier with result but still not satisfied yet.

Will go out and field check again shortly.

Orienteering - Park Planning (Walka Water Works) 2:30:00 [1] 6.0 km (25:00 / km)
shoes: New Balance Nov 2013

Time and distance approximate.

Walking around Walka Water Works getting four courses independently vetted. Vetter overall happier with outcome compared to early attempts.

Some descriptions clarified.
Some control positions tweaked.
Had to change the sequence of the Short Course butterfly loop due to inpenetrable scrub.

Ended up using 34 controls across 4 courses. Need to clarify what Control numbers are available further.

Next to move on to the multitude of map updates required.

The red belly black snake sleeping coiled up within 1 metre of a planned control site was of concern!

Gym Mayfield - Class Cycle 29:00 [3] 10.8 km (2:41 / km)

Bikes moved around again so I was on a different one which was easier.

Gym Mayfield - Class Cardio 30:00 [3]

Mix of circuit type exercises with 25 reps of each.
Didn't get as inspired today.

Note

Been convinced to attempt Touch Football this afternoon.
Only ever done this once before so long ago I can't remember when.
Considering I have the co-ordination levels of a dead cat this will be fairly embarressing.
But I can run and look bulky enough maybe people will steer clear of what I count as a "touch".

Orienteering - Park Planning (Walka Water Works) 2:00:00 [1]

More work on Park-O Final at Walka Water Works.

Regrowth over the last 7 years is so extensive and so prickly that people are going to totally hate it if I put some of the controls where I intended to.
It may be 'just' OK for people used to fighting through Bush but the people who only attend Park would crucify me afterwards. Also people who worry about snakes etc at the end of summer simply won't want to go in there. Yes you know who ... I am thinking of you too.

Spent time trying to find some scrubby areas open enough to get in and out of, with still features of interest, but with ONE clear path in so people won't have to fight.

Effectively going to abandon large areas of the map and put more controls out in the open areas. Still trying to work out an approach that will make this challenging rather than running from one tree in an open area, to a park bench in an open area, to again something else in an open area.

Note

As drove straight to Walka Water works from work went to Club afterwards for dinner. If, after eating what must have been the worlds biggest double patty fat and bacon laiden hamburger, I still lose weight then no idea. Dining partner couldn't believe I could actually finish it (and it was a struggle!).
