Orienteering - Park (#01 Braye Park) 38:44 [3] 5.4 km (7:10 / km)
22c shoes: Salomons June 2014

Nominal 3.6 km, 22 Controls.

I typically dislike Park as always following. So went "first" to avoid this. Then screwed up #3 badly so Stuart Kurtz lapped me. So then basically followed him from #3 to #14 anyway before he lost me.

Made a total mess of this. Wasted time at #3, #17, #20 and #21.
Ankle not happy on uneven ground despite the ankle guards.
Running on a slope with one leg down further from the other proved to be an issue.

For #3 I was just south of the dirt track running E-W up the hill rather than just south of the concrete path.

For #17 I saw the track and stood there trying to work out what the little T was on the map and why I couldn't see anything in reality.

For #20 I was thought I seemed too close to the adjoining road so backtracked about 100 m to the earlier track running NS and looked there even though I knew the map didn't make sense.

For #21 went a bit too far east.

Hope to enjoy next week more as I have run at Hunter River High twice and enjoyed both events due to the higher map complexity (and its almost flat).

Note

I had my own little "sheltered workshop" in the back of the station wagon after the Park-O event squashing the wire tether ferrules further with crimping tool and cutting 92 lengths of shrink wrap tubing and sliding over the looped ends of the wire tethers.

When got home, whilst waiting 45 minutes for dinner to cook (took the whole time!!!), I had the ovens griller on and stuck the tether lengths underneath in multiple lots to shrink the tubing.

Glad this is done.

Got really annoying as crimping tool actually squashed poorly and loosened up multiple ferrules so I had to check every single one for movement and hand squash again prior to heating up the shrink wrap tubing over the top.

Dropped off the finished tethers to Karen Blatchford on the way to work ready for her event next week.

Note

All outstanding gear for Orienteering Club SI unit tethers obtained.
All lengths cut, loops formed and half crimped ferrules so will attempt to better squash later.
Bought 3 colours of shrink wrap tubing so may finish off Wednesday or Thursday.

Gardening - General 1:00:00 [1]

5:30 pm - 6:15 pm
Distraction activity.
Stick collection plus a few more fallen paperbarks down the back block.
Very tidy now and getting hard to find anything.

6:15 pm - 6:30 pm
Fallen stick collection within sight of the Fire Pit.
7 PM

Note

Distraction activity.

Making up about 46 more wire tethers for the Orienteering club for securing SI unit controls.
Forgot that I used two ferrules at each end rather than one so under estimated the required amount when I guessed at the supplier.
Obtained 64 but need to get another 110 tomorrow!

Made up 10 short, 16 medium and 20 long.
Will have to chase up the 3 colours of shrink wrap tomorrow as well as can't remember what I did with the leftover bits from last time.

Not sure how many they want but supplier only had 78 m of wire on hand today. Going to cost about $160.

Orienteering - Park (O'Shea - Gwandalan) 1:07:18 [3] 9.51 km (7:05 / km)
22c shoes: Salomons June 2014

Gwandalan.
Nominal 11.8 km. Scale 1:10000. Long.
20 controls.
No partner so elected to get them all.
Didn't push hard based on the nominal distance but if I knew it was actually under 10 km I would have pushed to keep it under an hour.
Very very sweaty and then it rained anyway.

Thus endeth my first ever O'Shea event in 8 years of competing in Newcastle!
5 PM

Gardening - General 1:00:00 [1]

5:20 pm - 6:20 pm
Relaxing pulling out still more dead paperbarks, cutting up fallen branches, and lots of sticks.
1 wheelbarrows worth.
Continued despite intermittent rain.

Gym Mayfield - Class Weights 55:00 [3]

Time fill to wake up prior to drive tot win brothers prior to O'Shea Orienteering event at 2:30 pm
2 PM

Orienteering - Park (O'Shea - Pt Wolstoncroft) 39:58 [3] 5.3 km (7:32 / km)
22c shoes: Salomons June 2014

Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Recreation Centre.
Nominal 4.5 km. Scale 1:5000. Long A.
22 controls.
Tracks very overgrown.
Bush bashed from 9 to 10 so lost 5 minutes fighting through lantana and came out way too early on the lake shoreline. The only saving grace was there was someone elses footprints along the shoreline as well!

First timed bush or park event I have competed in since destroying ankle.

Pretty tired at the end and not looking forward physically to the 2nd leg.
3 PM

Orienteering - Park (O'Shea - Pt Wolstoncroft) 16:19 [3] 2.3 km (7:06 / km)
19c shoes: Salomons June 2014

Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Recreation Centre.
Nominal 2.2 km. Scale 1:2500. Long B
19 Controls.
Grabbed map, punched start and ran off towards control #1. Then realised that I hadn't taken a copy of control descriptions / numbers and it wasn't on the map either so ran back to the start and grabbed it.
So guaranteed to have the worst split of the day for that leg! Embarrassing screwup but at least by not having a running partner I didn't have to explain myself to someone else.

Very tired! Skipping the night event. Just as well because with tomorrows score event and no team mate I will "have" to get them all and will be twice the time of everyone else!

Run 5 km NSW - Unofficial Newy Park 26:19 [5] 5.0 km (5:16 / km)
weight:81.6kg shoes: Salomons June 2014

Early mark from work after a 12 hour day yesterday.
Must be my first attempt at a timed run post ankle injury. Time absymal.
Splits tell the story
4:39, 5:03, 5:26, 5:29, 5:35.
Sweaty dripping mess at the end.

Weight still declining and I will revert to normal portion sizes again soon. Down 2.4 kg since Jan 30. Balancing act somewhere between looking gaunt in the face and having a flat stomach.
4 PM

Gym Mayfield - Solo Bike 30:00 [3] 13.4 km (2:14 / km)

Somewhat leisurely effort prior to gym class

Gym Mayfield - Class Weights 55:00 [3]

Chest track a killer.
Fairly tired and need a good sleep catchup tonight after several early mornings in a row.

Could have left another week as very patchy and variable but elected to tidy up the front and back yards.

Whippersnipping around trees, drains, and house.

7:30 pm - 7:55 pm
