Orienteering - Rogaine (Huntergaine) 5:54:55 [1] 27.88 km (12:44 / km)

My first ever all walking Rogaine.
Drove up from Sydney on Friday night.

KC in attendance for her first ever time.
Maybe the longest walk we have done together ... I would have to check.

She held up well until the last two hours when blisters on her feet became agony. Last hour was at slower pace and taking almost as direct route to the finish that we could manage.

Pleasant sunny day with lovely company and great group atmosphere. Thanks to Sam and Carolyn and all the other organisers.

It was nice to catch up with some familiar Newcastle faces after almost a year away. Not sure how many "daleks" were out there but we only found the one at 102. It was "deja vu" day for me as it really was just an amalgamation of various Street-O maps but I still found some new areas.

We closely followed our original route until hour 4 when we started to drop loops. The only change we made prior was to go 42-81-90 instead of 42-74-90.

Managed approx. 5 km per hour for first 5 hours.
Points split :
Hour 1 - 300 pts
Hour 2 - 250 pts
Hour 3 - 240 pts
Hour 4 - 320 pts
Hour 5 - 260 pts
Hour 6 - 140 pts

At the four hour mark Control 65 we had drawn a potential loop 55-31-57-34 but decided to drop it and minimize the remaining hill climbing.

At the five hour mark we had intended to aim to 82-93-70-44-54-35 but we weren't remotely going to make that distance and KC was in pain so we cut it back to 67-35-54 and then dropped 21 as well.

The only problem we had was LAST control 54 as we were SE at the lower crossing but we figured it out eventually with some last minute jogging around in circles by me.

Route :
020 - 20 pts
032 - 50 pts
045 - 90 pts
062 - 150 pts
051 - 200 pts
102 - 300 pts - 1 hr - 5.4 km
064 - 360 pts
041 - 400 pts
080 - 480 pts
075 - 550 pts - 2 hrs - 9.8 km - Toilet break at Lambton park
056 - 600 pts
040 - 640 pts
033 - 670 pts
042 - 710 pts
081 - 790 pts - 3 hrs 15.16 km
090 - 880 pts
103 - 980 pts - water top up spot
073 - 1050 pts
065 - 1110 pts - 4 hrs - 19.15 km
077 - 1180 pts
100 - 1280 pts
091 - 1370 pts
067 - 1430 pts - 5 hrs 14 mins - 24.66 km - Time to bail out
035 - 1460 pts
054 - 1510 pts

Note

No parkrun today.

Another day working on 25 acres cutting up trees, lifting up fallen timber from prior weeks sessions, and driving a tractor slashing long grass.

Could easily spend a week or fortnight straight on this considering how much area they want cleared. Building a mountain of branches to be mulched one weekend when their is sufficient there to justify renting a large tow type shredder.

Chainsaw rapidly got blunt which put an end to that activity. Also KC ripped a hole in 4WD tyre which put a end to the tractor slashing (as battery was flat so kept using the 4WD to jump start it every time I stalled it).

Note

No bike ride today as had to drop car off at dealer I bought it from as after 3 months of chasing them they were finally getting me the spare key coded that they had promised when I signed the contract!

A 5 km run and a bit of discussion afterwards.

Orienteering - Street Sydney (Pymble Hill) 46:18 [3] 7.73 km (5:59 / km)

18 controls for 390 points with a 20 point penalty for being late.

Surprised to find David Kitchener a fellow Novacastrian from Newcastle Orienteering Club lining up at the start line immediately prior to my departure!

I didn't find the first control "2" on my course and there was another differently number control nearby (which must have been for another kids course or something). After finishing the event I went back and found the correct control.

I could have bailed early and come back on time but I pushed for an extra 20 points which got wiped out by being late. A few time wasters on the run going short distances up the wrong street and the normal level of searching for a few controls.

Unlike most of the other Sydney events this map was basically entirely Street-O with no bush areas. So pushed harder to keep the km rate up to my prior levels.

I was only 8 minutes from my older brothers house so I went to visit him afterwards for a chat.
