Another trip to SF for work so rented a bike and went out to do the Alpine Dam Loop, a great scenic but very tough ride in Marin County.
After finally getting through the less enjoyable city sections and nearing the dam I was disappointed to learn the road was closed near lake due to a slide. I asked a nearby cyclist how big the slide was and if it was possible to get around it for which he indicated it was still there and that rangers were patrolling the area telling cyclists to turn around.
I was gutted thinking I would miss the best parts of the ride but decided I would risk it and descend down to the lake to see for myself. The other cyclist indicated he would also give it a go if I was up for some company for which I had no problem with. Since it was getting late in the day he thought perhaps the rangers would be done for the day and we might be able to negotiate around/through the landslide.
As we descended to the lake and climbed after it was nice to meet Bruno, a multisport/triathlete from Chile. I told him about my time there racing PER and we talked about some Ironmans we have done. I also noticed while I was drippig sweat on the climbs, he was happily chatting away. During one of my strategic photo "breaks" I asked which races he'd done - IM Brazil and then IM Kona, for which he indicated his 9:12 KQ got him in. Eff me, no wonder this guy was killing me. From then I didn't feel so bad struggling to keep up and while it was good to get to know him I was really starting to fade. I brought 2 waters and 2 granola bars and my limited nutrition and indoor training rides was starting to show.
After passing the slide, which was cleaned up despite the road closed sign it was great to hit the 7 sisters (or 7 bitches as they are known, 7 rollers essentially) - a great rolling open area with ocean and redwood vistas. On the last bitch I finally was able to convince Bruno to continue on without me after about 2 hours riding together. From there I was happy to take a quick break, fuel up with my limited calories/water, reduce my effort and coast into Mill Valley and then SF.
Great ride, so happy to be out on a beauty day riding outside in such great terrain... and so happy I didn't pay attention to the road closed. A few photos:
