Liverpool Cross Challenge. 173rd.

I was hoping this would be the end of a good block of races/relays, but having a week’s cold set me back a bit. Anyway I was looking forward to this as a really quality field and good test this side of Christmas. It turned out to be great race, the expected fast start, but managed to settle in ok for the first lap. Second lap I overtook 9 blokes but then there were bigger gaps ahead and I spent the last lap very, very gradually reeling in another guy who I overtook in a ‘sprint’ finish. Plenty of mud and quite a tough course, despite the lack of hills, there were lots of sharp bends which made for hard work.

I’d definitely come back and do this race again. I think a lot of people are put off by the trial race at the front end, but even a lot further down the field you still get a great race out of it and a fitness test before the Yorkshires if nothing else.

Strava info is really useful for XC races as it shows the progression/regression throughout the laps of the race, normally my initial pace plateaus and then there’s a step change halfway / towards the end of the race, but this time it was a gradual slowing throughout the laps of 11:04 to 11:25 to 11:49. Work to do on threshold efforts.
