Running race 3:36:34 [1] 27.5 km (7.6 kph) +1713m

My first run after my fractured scaphoid and my plaster coming off. I didn't run once whilst the plaster was on (9 weeks) and I hadn't run much beforehand either as 2016 has been mainly a cycling year to date.

This was my fourth participation in the race and also my slowest!

I started mid-pack off 66 starters.

Clothes: La Sportiva Raptor shoes, X-socks (white), 2XU shorts with built in lycra inners, MDC t-shirt, Montane 1L bumbag (containing 500ml bottle which was three-quartes full at start, windproof top, half a Clif Shot Bloks pack, 2 x Clif Gels). Map. Thumb compass.

Weather: clear and warm but windy on tops. Headwind on section between Chwarel y Fan to Bal Mawr.

Nutrition: Not great. I had 7 beers the night before on a work jolly and stayed on a tipi in Hereford. I didn't go to sleep until about 2am! Then had a bacon bap for breakfast. Drank lots of water before the event but only about 500ml during it which probably wasn''t enough. Ate half a pack of CLIF Shot Bloks and two CLIF Gels during the race.

I slowed down a lot after Bal Mawr and was overtaken by Lou Summers (first lady) and another guy. Rosmenary Moorhouse-Gann was with me up until Grywnne Fechan Valley. She did really well as she was first lady for a while but slowed in the second half and got overtook by Lou Summers and Rona Davies. Not bad considering she only did 10 peaks two weaks ago.

My plaster cast came off this morning. The doctor thinks that my scaphoid has re-fused well (without benefit of doing X-Rays) as it didn;t hurt when he prodded it from different angles.

However I have very restricted movement in my wrist as my tendons/ligaments were probably sprained in the accident and weren't used due to immobility in plaster.

I was given some rehab exercises to do (every 2 hours) and informed not to bike or kayak with the wrist. Running is OK though as long as I don't fall on it!
