Tenerife Mount Teide Hike

Dawn and I flew to Tenerife South Airport on Friday 28 December and I decided to hike up Mount Teide the following day. I had bought a Tenerife Hikers’ Map before leav8ng the UK but didn’t plan a route until I got there.

My initial plan was to drive from Palm-mar to Parador, park up then do a loop fro there. However I decided to make it harder/longer and parked up in Vilaflor which is 800m lower in elevation at ~1400m.

I hiked from Vilaflor on GR131 up to the east side of Mount Guajara (to 2400m) then north on route 28 to the cable car station. I headed east along the road with the intention to go up Mount Teide on route 35 from the road. However I spotted an indistinct path up a broken up lava flow gully and decided to ‘short cut’ up there instead. This petered out and I was left making my own way up on what was in effect a boulder field to about 2900m altitude.

I joined route 35 at this point and slowly hiked up to the Altavista Refuge where I decided to stop and have some food and water. I had the bread/ham/cheese combo that Dawn made, drank loads of water and bought some more from the vending machine in the staffless refuge.

I put on my fleece (on top of MDC technical tee, arm warmers and gilet) at this point due to the cold. Plus buff for neck too. Not quite cold enough to put on hat and gloves as I knew i’d soon heat up.

I was really struggling from the refuge at 3250m to the cable station at 3555m due the altitude. I made it to the cable station and managed to go ‘cross country’ across the boulder field to intercept route SPN10 which is the path up to the summit. I managed to miss the official gate where you have to show a permit to get through. I heard a few shouts from below when I short-cutted which I suspect were from the officials. I ignored them.

The hike to th summit was very slow going! The 360 degree from the summit was cool and I took a few photos. I stripped off my fleece and gilet to have the obligatory photo in an MDC top too!

I then had a tough call to make. Do I catch the last cable car down at 1650 or try and get down on the trails. I asked the official at the top how long he thought it would take to get to the bottom. He said three hours but I only had 2 hours of sunlight. I decided to gamble as I knew i’d be faster than Jo Bloggs.

I got down to Parador just before 7pm and it was pitch black by then. I was lucky to get a taxi from the Parador hotel. He drove me back to Vilaflor and I drove back to Dawn in Palm-mar by 2005.

Food
Sandwich
4 bananas
2 cereal bars
2 x 750ml water carried from start and bought 500ml in refuge.

Pettit is an hour of aerobic Endurance work spent between 60-70% FTP.

Goals
Aerobic Endurance workouts are aimed at improving your aerobic-power-producing capabilities in a low stress manner.

By riding for increasingly longer periods of time, your endurance muscle fibers become more efficient at utilizing fat for fuel and sparing sugar stores for more intense efforts.

Additionally, Endurance workouts like this can improve oxygen delivery & utilization, increase muscular resistance to fatigue, improve integrity of connective tissue, and even help you improve your on-bike nutrition strategies.
