Note

Worked on preparing the bikepacking bike.

- fitted new 12sp GX rear derailleur
- new 12sp GX shifters
- new 12sp NX chain (Unable to source GX)
- change crank from powermeter one to a non PM one
- check tyres
- check bolts (ordered new Ti ones)

Questars Adventure Race 2021 #1 - Cotswolds

Kayak was cancelled due to high river levels. Got map (inc cp values) 30mins before starting.

I decided to bike first because that's my current strength and I haven't run for a while. Logic also applied to also potentially getting cold in the rain and then being able to warm up on the run.

Bike
Planning this wasn't easy because many of the obvious links between the CPs on Bredon Hill were out of bounds; they were footpaths and not bridleways. Therefore some in/outs and big circuituous routes were needed. I had planned to go anti-clockwise but decided to go clockwise at the last minute to avoid going up a stretch of bridleway marked as "very steep" on the map.

S>B21: opted for the bridleway over the road. Mistake. Very slow, bumpy and muddy. Managed to dislodge my compass whilst moving and had to go back and retrieve it.
B21>B20: OK
B20>B24: OK
B24>B27: OMG. The field had been ploughed and the broken up soil stuck to the tyres like glue! I also had a front mudguard one so the mud/soil kept plugging the gap between. I had to carry the bike for about 600m! Also took an age to push out the mud with a stick. The other problem that this was presented was that my gloves were caked in mud and I was unable to grab sweets from my food pouch (for remainder of bike ride) without getting mud/shit all over it. To eat, I had to stop the bike, lift the sweet bag from it and tip it into my mouth.
B27>B26: Took a footpath that looked like a bridleway (as on very wide track). Realised my mistake 400m up the muddy track and had to turn back.
B26>B29: OK
B29 (leaving): Major mistake. Took the road that went SW instead of the B/W that went SE. Lost 4 mins.
B29>B34: OK. Solid climb up from the road to B34.
B34>B35: Descent then plenty of road. Stopped a little early before realising the CP was slightly further on.
B35>B31: Long road section then steep climb up road and track.
B31>B32: Big descent and big ascent mainly on road. The pump that I attached to the fork worked itself loose so I had to stop and place it in my pocket.
B32>B30: Took a slightly different route from that planned and it was a good choice.
B30>B33: Descent on muddy track. OK. Tyres were a little sketchy in places.
B33>B28: Back up the same track, past B30 to the highest point on the whole course (on Bredon Hill).
B28>B25: Big descent on a mixture of terrain. Had to stop a few times to check the map. I'm glad that I switched from anti-clockwise to clockwise otherwise I would have had to go up a very technical, steep, rocky and muddy track.
B25>B22: Road. OK.
B22>B23: Very muddy! Cycled past the CP and had to double back.
B23>Transition: OK

Cleared the bike course. Was longer and took more time than I had hoped but hey ho.

Run
Had 90 minutes for this. I didn't have a pre-plan so I made it up on the hoof. Did a clockwise loop which took in R3, R7, R6, R10, R8, R4, R2 & R1. I hadn't ran for ~6 weeks prior to this so I took it easy. I decided to drop R11 (1km in out) to play it safe and came back with 5.5 minutes to spare.

On the provisional results, I hadn't been awarded the scores for R4 and R8. I collected 605 points and not the 570 on the provisional results.

Comments
Interestingly, 7 of the top 8 in the Masters category ran first. Nick Dallimore was the only exception but he probably got the balance of bike/run right. So it was clear that biking first and clearing it wasn't the best strategy.

My nav was very rusty and I didn't have a thumb compass which would have avoided many of my mistakes.
