Run up Rapaki (23 mins) then up Mt Vernon, then 6 or so 40-50m hill sprints then run back. Foot went numb again, just before top of Rapaki. Quite painful.

Mt Pfeifer Mega Mission - turned terrifying adventure!


This weekend I was foolish enough to agree to a nice tramping trip with Tim Farrant and we left Christchurch on the Friday with spirits undampened by horrid weather reports.

On Saturday morning we arose to rain steadily coming down. Knowing this was a trip to be prepared for he packed "Aaron Prince's" map from the batch. Starting the trip from the C2C footbridge we made good progress and were at Waharoa Saddle soon after 12pm. With the rain still coming down thick and fast we continued up to above the bush-line.

Here the gale force NW winds started pelting us, and tried to blow us from the ridge. Unfortunately I am much smaller than Tim and although my pack was soaked right through and weighing me down, there were more than enough hairy moments where I nearly got blown away! We came over the point just north of point 1592, and descended into the large open basin. Large snow pockets made for quick travel, but the driving rain (and lets not forget the stinging hail) made for painful progress, and before long we were getting demoralized (putting it lightly there, Tim) and lost in the thick mist.

This seemed like the ideal time for Tim to bring out the map and do some navigation. To his surprise the Pfeifer section had been cut off the map! Was feeling awfully miserable/ sad/ cold/ depressed/ scared/ bedraggled and quite worried that I may have been lead to certain death from exposure by Mountain Man himself! We sat down (semi) out of the wind on the south side of the main range and reassessed the situation, basically I said I was scared and Tim pretended he wasn't. The time was 2:30pm.
We both put on another fleece top (thanks Tim), and ate some (heaps) of chocolate. We had just enough daylight, and if we kept eating (bread rolls minus the hot beef I had lost earlier) we would be able to return to the car by nightfall. We set out to retrace our steps.

We found the snow pockets with our footprints still visible in places, signed our initials, then returned to the main ridge down, and reached the tarns by 4pm. The weather was very rough, but with plenty of fuel stops we made it back to the saddle (my mood was much better at this point I think). The ground was very slippery but once we were at the saddle it was clear that we should be able to make it back to the car. It was quite a relief that the main risk of death was now over!

We were back at the car at 8:15pm, and cooking dinner in a nice warm batch by 9pm (chips, lemonade, hummus, fried bread and butter, risotto, the hot beef I found hiding in the top pocket of the stupid pack, but none of the wine that Tim was kind enough to carry the entire tramp hehehe). The trip is a definite addition to "The list of stupid things Tim's convinced me to do", but we lived to see another day......so apparently it was another successful trip?
