Run 45:13 [2] 5.4 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Memorial. Late morning run. HOT! My god it was hot. Legitimately ugly. Anyway, recovery type run and just tried to stay consistent. I hate the heat and 212% humidity out there...

Dog Walking 31:10 [1] 1.65 mi (18:54 / mi)

Thursday Aug 30, 2012 #

Run 51:52 [3] 6.2 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Cloverleaf. Hill repeats x 25 minutes. Med-hard effort uphill, walk the steep downhill part. Focused on form, relaxing, and turnover. Managed to get one extra loop in about the same amount of time as the last workout like this and feel better doing it. The slightly cooler weather helped but not as much as having a 2x caffeinated gel before running today. The summer hill workouts seem to be paying off and they're actually more fun than just running the same route everyday.

Dog Walking 28:05 [1] 1.5 mi (18:43 / mi)

Dog Walking 31:28 [1] 1.5 mi (20:59 / mi)

Wednesday Aug 29, 2012 #

Run 46:33 [2] 5.5 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 3 - blue/orange

Arboretum. Spent some time last night rolling on the foam and the wooden dowel. Interestingly, it seems to have helped a bit. I felt a little better today and not so much soreness or knee pain. I'm thinking the knee tendonitis may be caused by tight IT, calves, and quads, which is probably all brought on by bad hips.

Dog Walking 31:24 [1] 1.65 mi (19:02 / mi)

Dog Walking 22:12 [1] 1.15 mi (19:18 / mi)

Tuesday Aug 28, 2012 #

Run 47:01 [3] 5.5 mi (8:33 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2's - grey/red

Memorial. With 3 mile progressive at 7:55,7:47,7:33. The knee is only getting worse even after taking a lot of time off. Everything is hurting, in fact. No matter what I do, I can't seem to find any improvements or get back to running like I was 2 summers ago...or even last summer for that matter. I'm extremely unmotivated right now because of the complete lack of progress.

Dog Walking 29:15 [1] 1.5 mi (19:30 / mi)

Run 46:44 [2] 5.5 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2's - grey/red

Memorial. With 3 miles at ~8:10. Mornings are still extremely humid.

Run 1:47:20 [2] 12.25 mi (8:46 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2's - grey/red

Tour de bayou with Miles. Really hot, humid, and suffocating. No breeze. The concrete is killing my hips, back, and the left knee pain isn't going away. I need a serious change of scenery.

Dog Walking 27:40 [1] 1.5 mi (18:27 / mi)

Run 43:55 [2] 5.5 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 3 - blue/orange

Memorial. NB's battling a nasty summer-time cold so I got a late start after taking care of her this morning. I had every intention of running two loops of memorial for an 8.5 mile day to help make-up for yesterday. After the first loop, I felt truly baked from the sun and heat and decided to just come home. Plus, I was getting a ferocious little hot-spot on my left achilles from the new shoes. But, after I got home I realized that the main reason I felt shot was that I was running way too hard for being as late as it was (~10:30-11). I wanted to be running 8:20's or slower. Should've been paying better attention.

Dog Walking 27:10 [1] 1.35 mi (20:07 / mi)

Tuesday Aug 21, 2012 #

Note

Early jury duty and the dog went to daycare so no running or walking.

Monday Aug 20, 2012 #

Run 47:00 [2] 5.5 mi (8:33 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Memorial. New plan. Run to/from park together and then I'll try to run my normal easy pace around the loop and a touch extra. Worked out great today and I felt good. The cooler temps and lower humidity didn't hurt. Did 3 miles at about 8:12 pace.

Dog Walking 29:00 [1] 1.5 mi (19:20 / mi)

Dog Walking 14:34 [1] 0.75 mi (19:25 / mi)

Caught in the rain.

Dog Walking 37:05 [1] 1.85 mi (20:03 / mi)

Caught in the rain, again!

Saturday Aug 18, 2012 #

Run 1:38:20 [2] 10.5 mi (9:22 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 3 - blue/orange

Heights bike path/memorial. Tough day for me. Several walk breaks. When we were running, it was actually at a good clip. I just couldn't maintain and forced Miles to walk significantly more than I'm sure he wanted to or intended. It was outrageously humid and I was just having an off day.

Note

Misty walked Gordy both times today.

Dog Walking 24:00 [1] 1.25 mi (19:12 / mi)

Dog Walking 31:45 [1] 1.65 mi (19:15 / mi)

Thursday Aug 16, 2012 #

Run 45:30 [3] 5.25 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Cloverleafs. Tough one this morning. Once we got to the cloverleafs, I went out harder and knew immediately it wasn't going to be my day. Definitely have to take a gel or some kind of calories before trying a harder day. Still managed to run harder for about 2.25 on the hills, ran easy to/from the cloverleafs.

Dog Walking 31:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:40 / mi)

Dog Walking 30:30 [1] 1.5 mi (20:20 / mi)

Wednesday Aug 15, 2012 #

Run 47:28 [2] 5.5 mi (8:38 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Arboretum. Hot and exceptionally humid. That's about all there is to say.

Dog Walking 13:10 [1] 0.65 mi (20:15 / mi)

Dog Walking 33:50 [1] 1.65 mi (20:30 / mi)

Tuesday Aug 14, 2012 #

Run 47:59 [3] 5.5 mi (8:43 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Memorial. Speed day. Ran to/from park slow.
3 mile tempo at 7:34 avg pace. (2.91 mile loop + ~30 sec extra)
WIth the heat and ridiculous humidity, I can live with that pretty well.

Dog Walking 26:55 [1] 1.35 mi (19:56 / mi)

Monday Aug 13, 2012 #

Run 48:41 [2] 5.5 mi (8:51 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Memorial. Back at the routine with NB. Noticed that the knee pain increases when I go slower and I'm starting to wonder if it's from altering my stride. NB and I might have to split up for part of the run and only run to/from the park together.

Dog Walking 28:25 [1] 1.45 mi (19:36 / mi)

Dog Walking 27:02 [1] 1.35 mi (20:01 / mi)

Dog Walking 29:48 [1] 1.5 mi (19:52 / mi)

Saturday Aug 11, 2012 #

Run 50:30 [2] 6.0 mi (8:25 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Memorial. Absolutely miserable morning. One of the worst running days I've ever had. In the middle of the run I simply stopped and sat down to ask myself why I was even out there. Why should I run one more step? The single and only answer I could muster was so that I could get home... Very demoralizing.

Dog Walking 48:30 [2] 3.0 mi (16:10 / mi)

Dog Walking 25:00 [1] 1.25 mi (20:00 / mi)

Thursday Aug 9, 2012 #

Dog Walking 26:45 [1] 1.35 mi (19:49 / mi)

Run 47:10 [2] 5.75 mi (8:12 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Memorial. Two things:

1. 9:45 isn't any better than 10:15
2. Same route, much more sensible pace, still feel like hammered shit at the end. August in Houston is as close to hell on Earth, weather-wise, as you can probably get.

Dog Walking 29:12 [1] 1.5 mi (19:28 / mi)

Dog Walking 25:00 [1] 1.25 mi (20:00 / mi)

Note

Still nursing the knee. I'll try to run tomorrow.

Tuesday Aug 7, 2012 #

Dog Walking 28:45 [1] 1.5 mi (19:10 / mi)

Note

Zero day for running. The left knee is really sore today. I've been ignoring it for about 2-3 weeks now so I probably need to just take some ibuprofen and ice it and see if I can't get the inflammation to go away.

Dog Walking 30:12 [1] 1.5 mi (20:08 / mi)

Monday Aug 6, 2012 #

Dog Walking 26:25 [1] 1.35 mi (19:34 / mi)

Run 45:15 [2] 5.75 mi (7:52 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 2 - grey/red

Memorial. I learned something important today that I'd like to pass along to all the aspiring olympians who may stumble upon this humble training log. Never, under any circumstances, run at 10:15a.m., in Houston, in August. If your choice is to do the majority of your run between 9:30am and 4 pm or not run at all, take the zero day. No good can come of it. Oh yeah, and if you find yourself feeling a little itchy to run faster than normal, DO NOT DO IT.

Run 1:44:35 [2] 11.0 mi (9:30 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2's - grey/red

Terry Hershey. Started off pretty bad. Miles and I both felt like hell but we came around once we hit the trails. Ended up having a pretty good run and did it smart by staying out of the direct sun. The absolute worst part of the day was the atrocious and nauseating smell from the bayou. I don't know the cause but the effect was to make us practically wretch. So foul. The American River and the Colorado in the GC never smelled like that!

Thursday Aug 2, 2012 #

Run 49:15 [3] 5.8 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2's - grey/red

Cloverleaf. Jog to/from home to warm-up and cool-down. Continuous 25 min. Hard uphill, walk the steep downhill part. Probably the best quality workout I've had all summer. There's a noticeable strength improvement from doing the hills consistently all summer. The hill days are definitely paying off.

Run 56:00 [2] 5.5 mi (10:11 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2's - grey/red

Sawyer st bridge out and back. Run/walk with NB. We're struggling a bit with the routine and late summer doldrums. A short break may be in order.
