Orienteering (warmup course) 20:00 [2] **** 2.0 km (10:00 / km)

Warming on a warmup course plus some running.

Orienteering race 46:13 [3] ***** 4.1 km (11:16 / km) +155m 9:29 / km
spiked:13/19c

Red-X middle at SML champs in Lynn woods, Boston. Absolutely nice middle course design by Boris! Plenty of places to switch gears and direction coupled with very difficult rocky and green terrain. And nice weather! As always this year plenty of mistakes too :(

On #1 went on trails way left. May be it was good choice but definitely not the fastest one.

Mistakes:
#3 0:15 for shaky bearing attack from the trail bend. Way to the right.
#4 0:20 bad bearing. Missed it too high and overrun.
#5 3:00 is just disaster. I selected trail variant via tower and attacked from the first trail bend but didn't feel right with map contact so stopped something like 10m right before the control and made tour back to the trails and re-attacked very slowly. More confidence in handling map and terrain reading would prevent it.
#11 3:30 another disaster. There was unmapped stream on the way due to high water on the swamp above that prompted to make classic parallel mistake. I was not confident with map reading as should rely on more map clues. Real stream on map was in 3rd re-entrant not 2nd one.
#14 0:30 I went via start but going left on trail immediately would be faster without additional climb.
#16 1:00 again variant mistake. I saw variant via finish area all completely on trails but selected instead more "straight" one and got stucked in green briars plus shaky attack from blind trail.

Overall loss of about 8:30! 37:30 or so would be very good time.

Kudos to CSU for another nice day of competition!

Trail run (warmup) 20:00 [2] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Orienteering race 20:54 [4] *** 2.6 km (8:02 / km) +90m 6:51 / km
spiked:19/22c

Red Sprint at SML Champs at Franklin park in Boston. Nice weather. Nice course. Very bad execution :( I warmed up nicely and started race in a proper mood but disaster came at #4 as a punishment for not being careful with reading a clue sheet ahead. For some unbeknown reason it locked in my head that the control is at outside corner of the building. It took me more than 2 minutes of frantic searching and almost convincing that control is missing to realize that it is in the inside corner of the wall. Dumb!

Mistakes:
#4 2:50 loss due not reading clue sheet.
#6 0:20 loss due to drifting on bearing left and missing.
#7-#8 0:10 for being frastrated and thinking that race is over thus slowing down.
#16 0:10 for poor control attack from the trail bend.

Overall loss of 3:30 thus missing 17:30 which is proper for this sprint.

Also had difficulties understanding faded trails on the map. I think I need glasses os something as for the last year my eyesight dropped dramatically.

Sprint course was nicely planned - cudos to course designer. Although I am not a fan of wood sprints.
