Running 7:09:00 [2] 31.0 mi (13:50 / mi) +7165ft 11:21 / mi
shoes: NB 1210

Long run at White Ranch - twice around the long loop. Would have been better to go higher, but there's still too much snow. Did the first loop with Dakota and Izzy, and Ralph was going to meet me after the first loop to switch dogs, but on the way down the hill I almost stepped on a rattlesnake so I did the second without dogs. First loop was probably the fastest I've ever run that loop, second was a little slower. I ran out of water the last hour or so and tacked on some extra mileage going to a campground to see if there was water, but there wasn't. Beautiful day...the wildflowers were amazing and I saw lots of birds (couple western tanagers and some bright blue little guy).

Run #2. First loop (easy) was 32:08. Second loop (hard, broken into 5 segments with 2 min rest in between) was 25:43. Then ~7 min easy CD. Time doesn't include rest breaks. Asthma was better today after the rain.

Tempo run on TM. This didn't go so well. 15 min WU, then I was supposed to do 30 min @ 8:13, but my asthma started acting up pretty badly and all I could manage was about 15 minutes at tempo pace. Did another 15 min easy and then 5 min walking. Now that it's spring and the pollen is out, I think I'll have to use my inhaler before my harder runs.

Hike with pack 2:00:00 [3]

Hike to/from Staunton Rocks.

Climbing 4:00:00 [3]

Staunton Rocks. I think we're going to be climbing here quite a bit. Did one particularly nice route that started in a cave/chimney and went out onto an airy face with a great finger crack. Lots of people out today - we met Bob D'Antonio (the guidebook author) as well as another guy who has been climbing in the South Platte forever and helped Jason Haas write his guidebook.

Running 40:00 [2] 3.7 mi (10:49 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Guide

Super slow ultra shuffle to the lake with Dakota. Ran into several elk along a trail that goes between a neighborhood and the lake. I gave them a wide berth, but one of them must have hated dogs or something because she ran straight at us! I started yelling and waving my arms and she backed off a little. But she kept following/chasing me and I had to keep yelling or I thought she would charge us. Finally she stopped following me, so I ran down to the lake, borrowed a cell phone, and called Ralph to pick me up because I didn't want to go by her again!
