Orienteering race 30:07 [3]

Struggled a bit reading the map, probably need new glasses, my short-sightedness is moving on to long-sightedness and I'm needing to take my glasses off to read the map!! Some days seem worse than others.

Have no idea what I was playing at on #2, couldn't read what was up and down but what the hell, got a couple of extra hill reps in while I was there (have a look at route gadget and you'll see what I mean)

Can't for the life of me remember what I did going to #6 but it took way too long but once I spotted the large clearing all became clear

Ankle started playing up a bit after ~10 minutes, slowed to a bit of a hobble towards the end. I'd slipped on stairs and hyper-extended the ankle on wednesday which didn't do it too much good, wobbly forest floor didn't help (though it was great for running).

Orienteering race 34:32 [3]

Decided ankle would be OK with an extra layer of strapping tape. OK for ~10 minutes (again) then got worse and worse, but not enough to stop

Had even more trouble reading the map this afternoon, decided my best approach was to take accurate compass bearings which worked out pretty good until #9 where on the wide flatish hill I got pushed to the left by the cutty grass. This meant that I completely missed the 2 contour hill with depression to the left just before the control that was my attack point. Bye bye 5 minutes. If I could have knocked that down to a 3 minute mistake would have come in 2nd, arrrg!

Interestingly most people had a spot of bother on this control

Orienteering race 1:09:47 [3]

QB1: Telegraph road

A bit rusty and creaky as normal with some interesting navigation thrown into the mix.

Thought I was to the left coming up the slope to #4 so headed right. Nope, did my normal veering right in the forest and took a while to relocate.

At #6 went up the slope to the right way too early and couldn't really figure out where I was. It was very obvious afterwards when I saw the nice big reentrant that I went up the right side of. Then faffed around relocating (again).

Went left for a change heading towards #14 which confused me even more than normal. Thought I was at the intersection past the control but no, was way off to the left. Finally figured that out .

Minor detour to the right of #15 but sorted that out fairly quickly.

Run 37:00 [3]

jog around domain, don't think it quite qualified as a run, a few ups and downs but avoided the longer hills. Good news is that back of knees have loosened up with the time off., let';s see of they stay that way

It looks like my official introduction to 'real' M50's orienteering will probably see me some where down towards the back end of the field. I shall enjoy my underdog tag

And my competitors for this weekend can now relax as they all realise that I've done practically no training and I'm not really in 'stealth mode'
