Run race (xterra) 1:07:00 [4] 11.5 km (5:50 / km) +415m 4:56 / km

Quite a few steep wee hills - I had to walk quite a lot of them. While I could probably run them (slowly) during a training run I wasn't up for it today when I had been pushing on the other bits. Still, went flying past heaps of people on the steep, slippery downhill bits.

Didn't have too much left in the tank for the last bit along the beach so I guess I'd gone fairly hard earlier

Drills 40:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 1160

Dynamic stretching and Mike's drills.

The grass was rather slippery today (after heaps of rain yesterday) which I found made it hard to get my speed up as my feet were slipping all over the place.

Was also a bit tired from yesterday (and after having a few vinos with my sister who's off to Canada for 6 weeks)

I guess that means I'll be a little fresher and not as sore tomorrow for the xterra run at Shakespear...

Road bike (commute) 1:06:00 [3] 20.0 km (18.2 kph)

From Boric (cnr SH16 and Riverhead Rd)

A bit slower in the wet, might have been the extra drag on the tyres from all of those puddles...

Run 51:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 1160

Supposed to be an easy run however everything was reasonably keen on going a bit harder. Practiced hill running technique on bond street and williamson ave.

The good news is that the new technique seems to make it quite easy to lift the pace :-)

It's then a question of managing the effort so that the heart, lungs and legs don't implode!

Orienteering race (White's Line South) 1:04:33 [3] 5.7 km (11:19 / km)

1: Short leg. Ran along track for a bit then turned right but at the angle I should have taken from the start triangle so ended up to the left. Lost a little time here

A few good legs including long leg to 4 were good then...

5: Around hill, turn leftish and hit control. Shame I missed the 'turn left' bit. Lost 1-2 minutes

6: Easy nav to track intersection and water drop. Over saddle, down reentrant, across depression, up steep slope, around hill, down reentrant to track junction. Missed the 'go around the hill' bit (again). There were extra tracks and I got a bit confused about where I was. Eventually got myself turned the right way and hit track, figured out were I was and hit the control dead on. Was way slow once I got mixed up and struggled to figure out what I was doing. Dropped down 7 places in 2 controls

There seems to be a common theme this weekend - I plan OK to go around a feature (either a hill or depression) and I just carry on the same line and not leaving the feature at the correct angle. Something to think about

9: Short leg in complex area. Should have been easy enough but went a little left. Found it hard to read map as there's lots going on.

10: Pulled up short and a little right. Found a very obvious narrow reentrant to relocate off, now where is it on the map?? Eventually found it (it was surprisingly hard to find...) then hit control bang on. Interestingly 3 others on my course arrived around the same (incorrect) spot and were milling around just before I figured it out. I managed to make myself look indecisive and they didn't follow me!!

13: too far right in complex area, bounced off track

14: too far right again, bounced off road
