Orienteering race (Oceania Middle) 1:05:43 [4] 3.0 km (21:54 / km)

Old gold mining place where they'd sluiced the terrain similar to Naseby so rather complicated

A very daunting model map on the way to the start - sort of made sense of things but not at all confident that I had it sussed after spending ~25 minutes on one rather small section of map.

Still tired but at least the rain had stopped and the bright yellow thing was out.

Erratic nav again that ended up being a bit expensive...

Went right past #4, looked at the control and said to myself "that's not mine". I think it was numbered 158 but I was looking for 58... Lost ~2 minutes sorting that out and it was only a ~100m leg - the control circles were almost touching

Took the longer and safer way on long leg to 9 bouncing off the corner of the lake so happy enough with that choice

Stuff up on 12 - somehow got directionally challenged and ended up ~45 degrees to the right of where I wanted to be. Came to a grinding halt when I could see the event center and really struggled to relocate. Sort of knew approximately where I was but couldn't dive back in until I knew *exactly* where I was otherwise I might still be in there... eventually relocated off #15. Lost at least 10 minutes

Orienteering race (Oceania Long Warby) 1:56:38 [4] 5.9 km (19:46 / km) +250m 16:19 / km

Feeling pretty tired, I guess a combination of the travel and not really recovering enough from the last few weeks training.

It was a rather cold and wet day, not ideal for me as I ended up freezing my a off at the end and everything pretty much seized up, brain included. Running felt pretty mediocre and nav was a pretty erratic the whole way.

Long leg 6->7 couldn't make up my mind which way to go - straightish which included going down, down, down then up, up, up didn't look good as I could see how far down it was and then how much higher I'd have to climb so went for the right hand choice to keep my elevation. Was rather hesitant and inaccurate and ended up going too far uphill to the right and hitting the road which would have been OK if I'd known *where* on the road I was. I took a (correct) guess and was able to relocate further up the road. Phew. Still lost a bucket load of time

9: Struggled here. Was standing on a slab of rock and couldn't for the life of me figure out where it was on the map. After scurrying around for a while eventually discovered that the rock was mapped in the control circle - I was looking for grey in yellow however it was grey in *white* - d'oh! Lost quite a few minutes here as was within ~10m of the control when I first reached the rock.

14: Disaster. Multiple relocations off three different points did not help. Eventually (30 minutes later) stumbled onto the control. No idea what was going on.

Was doing a good iceblock impression by this stage. Nothing was working at all well - couldn't move and brain was AWOL. Managed to (somehow) wander around and find the last few controls - have no idea how I found 15 but it's on my printout so I must have been there!

It seemed a lot greener and slower than when I was last here 2 years ago - or maybe my memory is failing...

Drills 29:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 1160

Easy loop around Mt Eden

Legs were a little heavy and unresponsive - it's funny how I'm finding it a little awkward running slowly now!

Off to Aus first thing in the morning so I guess I find out fairly soon how all of this training's going to work out.

First event is at Warby Park just out of Wangaratta where we had two events 2 years back. Looking forward to having another run there - and avoiding the mistakes I made last time. So remember, be more accurate with direction when going up munty big climbs so I don't go off my intended course...
