Run race 8:02:00 [3] 60.0 km (8:02 / km)
shoes: Asics 1160

Was an early start so I had to get up at 3:30am in order to get down to Petone to catch the bus to the start which left at 4:45am. So was a little tired (and with a bit of motion sickness after the drive over the Rimutakas) at the start.

There were only ~15 of us doing the 60km and I very quickly got left behind as everyone else was too fast. Didn't see anyone else from ~1km in (when they went around a bend) until I caught four 10k walkers about 1km from the end.

I trundled along at what I thought was a reasonable pace but unfortunately the legs started packing up after around 4 hours. Everything else was OK, felt fine, food and hydration were good, just legs that were not working too well. Ended up with right knee pretty much seizing up - had a dreadful job getting started again after brief stops at the drink stations. Had to stretch everything I could think of then start at a hobbly walk until I could eventually start a slow jog. *sigh*. Was a very painful few hours. Main pain now (Mon night) is right adductor, everything is feeling a lot better.

Incline was 37:00 (cf 34:30 at Christmas)
Hit end of incline track ~2:10
Te Marua in 3:16:24
Start of half 4:45:23
Finish in 8:02:16

So...
18km -> 2:10
21km -> 2:35
21km -> 3:17 Quite a bit of walking here (BTW C ran this in 2:20)

Starting to get a theory on my legs: A lot of my long runs have been over relatively slow terrain (eg waitaks). Even though I might be out for 5-6 hours the distance isn't really all that far. Thinking back over the long runs that I have had problems with - trouble seems to start at somewhere around 30-35km.

* Coast to coast run (2002) - very sore knees over last few kms (but still managed to largely run it)
* Tarawera 60km last year - legs seized up
* Rimutaka 40km Christmas - ditto
* This run 60km - ditto

Can't recall any other runs that I've done over ~30km or so.

Thinking I need to change my longer runs to include more actual running rather than all the steep slow stuff I've been doing in the waitaks (even though that's good fun...) to try and get the legs used to covering the distance (rather than just time). So will probably try running around the Riverhead roads and tracks (and hopefully won't cook in the sun - which was one of the reasons I started going to the Waitaks)

Not feeling all that confident at the moment that I'll manage 85km in 8 weeks :-(

Kept the pace nice and easy as a mini-taper for Saturday even though this is supposedly one of my peak volume weeks
