Queenstown marathon
Wasn't too sure how I'd go with the rather poor lead up however felt OK
Started off feeling pretty comfortable at my planned 6min/km, was good for ~15km then the old right flexor started complaining - actually, it hadn't felt too good in the cramped seats on the flight down (on the bright side I did manage to keep my lunch down (just) in the approach to landing...)
Unfortunately I never got the hip flexor under control all day and it got worse and worse which meant that I had stop and try to stretch things out.
Felt at 30km that even though I was down ~15minutes on my target that I could, perhaps, finish OK. But no. Even had a couple of separate sets of medical people asking if I needed help towards the end, but as they weren't able to perform a leg transplant I carried on
Ended up walking/hobbling/limping/lurching my way to the finish, although it was a bit embarrassing with everyone in town cheering you on as you hobble by so felt that I had to force a very slow 'jog' for the last few hundred meters
Annoyingly I felt fine, heaps of energy, not at all tired, just rather sore legs (of course trying to compensate for the hip flexor meant that others things got a bit overloaded and sore as well...)
5km splits tell the story...
5km - 0:30
10km - 0:30
15km - 0:31
20km - 0:33
25km - 0:34
30km - 0:36
35km - 0:41
40km - 1:03
42.2km - 0:27
The lack of decent long runs in the leadup was the main problem, I just wasn't conditioned to run continuously for that far/long. I do also have a troublesome right hip flexor that I can manage in shorter events or longer ones where I can walk more, however trying to run for 4+hours solid was a bit beyond it (this time)
