Bicycling (Stationary) 24:00 [2] 8.0 mi (3:00 / mi)

Standard 24 minute hill workout on the stationary bike, more to try to work out the knee I twisted yesterday than anything else. Felt fine during the workout, but of course afterwards felt the usual sharp pain in my right buttock.

Went to see my doctor at Kaiser the next day (Thursday), and although he did take X-rays, he thinks there is nothing wrong with me that rest won't cure. So I'm just going to rest until Sunday, when I'll try to vet the courses for the SF Night And Day.

Bicycling (Stationary) 20:00 [1] 4.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Well, if anyone cares, after a week's rest, I am tentatively starting to train again. Twenty minutes on the trainer at home felt OK. I was diagnosed with a leg length discrepancy this week, and given stretches and strengthening exercises for my back. Time will tell if my problems are really that simple.

Bicycling 35:00 [1] 8.0 mi (4:22 / mi)

Ride to track--to Colonial Donuts--home afterwards

Running intervals 25:00 [4] 3.0 mi (8:20 / mi)

OK, time to get some advice on my injury. Bicycled to the Piedmont track, and felt GOOD during my run! Did a set of 3x1000, planning to stop at the first sign of pain. But there was no pain at all, and I left the track feeling happy that I'm getting better.

But after sitting for an hour or so at Colonial afterwards, when I got up to leave, all of a sudden my back hurt quite a bit, and in yet another different spot than the last three occasions. This time the pain and stiffness is higher up the back, and it hurts when I bend forwards or backwards from the waist. I haven't had any trouble in this area until now.

I may not be posting here again until I figure out what the hell is wrong with me.

Bicycling (MTB) 20:00 [2] 5.0 mi (4:00 / mi)

Short ride from school up Park to Montclair and back.

Bicycling (MTB) 1:10:00 [3] 12.0 mi (5:50 / mi)

After yesterday's day off, my back feels almost back to normal. So here's the plan: An easy ride tomorrow, another day off Saturday, then I'll try to run at the Piedmont track Sunday morning.

Rode up Tunnel Road and down Broadway Terrace, with a useless detour through the apartment complex by the Caldecott Tunnel. No obvious way to get through to Tunnel Road any more!

Bicycling (MTB) 1:00:00 [3] 10.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

Another classic hillclimb, up Thorndale to the intersection of Tunnel Road and Grizzly Peak. It's been a LONG time since I've been up that hill. It wasn't quite as tough as I remembered (although I don't think I ever climbed it using mountain bike gears before), and all the big new homes up near the top are certainly new.

Bicycling (Stationary) 40:00 [3] 10.0 mi (4:00 / mi)

Rained all day today, so I hit the indoor trainer. Amazingly, my back feels better today than it did before the orienteering event yesterday.

Orienteering race 51:26 [2] **** 3.7 km (13:54 / km) +100m 12:15 / km
spiked:9/9c

Orienteering at Mississippi Bar. Only did the Brown course, as I didn't want to push my back too hard. Unfortunately the sharp pain came back before I even got to the first control, but I was able to walk a lot of it off and managed to finish the course, if not exactly at a run, at least at a pretty good shuffle. And I made no navigational errors at all in the rockpiles, which was something to feel good about.

At 8 PM I'm still feeling sore, but this time the major pain is on the outside of my right buttocks, up near the hip. So strange that I hurt in a different place every time I try to run. I'll probably try to call the trainer that Dennis recommended this week, and have him take a look at me.

Running (Treadmill) 12:00 [1] 1.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Cautious warmup/cooldown on treadmill. I've decided to try orienteering at Mississippi Bar tomorrow, as my back is stiff but not painful.

Bicycling (MTB) 1:30:00 [3] 12.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Around the back side of the Claremont and up the big climb to Grizzly Peak. I'm starting to feel like I'm getting back in decent bicycling shape again, at least.

Bicycling (MTB) 40:00 [2] 10.0 mi (4:00 / mi)

Easier afternoon ride from school to Montclair via Scenic. Still not brave enough to attempt any running at all.

Bicycling (MTB) 1:30:00 [3] 12.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Another classic ride. Started from HRS, through Lake Temescal to Tunnel Road. Felt good (or crazy) enough to then make the turn at Charing Cross and climb the big hills all the way up to Grizzly Peak. I was stiff and tired when I got to Royal Ground for my well-earned latte, but recovered quickly, and my back feels pretty good now. Perhaps tough climbs is what I need to loosen up whatever is wrong with my back.

Probably won't try running again for at least another week.

Bicycling (MTB) 2:00:00 [2] 25.0 mi (4:48 / mi)

More bicycling in lieu of running. For the first time in many years, took the traditional ride from here to Castro Valley. (Hard to believe I once rode there and back via Redwood Road every single morning, starting at 6 AM). Not too surprising to discover a new Starbucks and bagel shop on the main road through town, which I stopped at for breakfast in place of the old donut shop.

Then I continued on to Dublin and took BART back home. No physical problems to speak of.
