Orienteering race (Gauteng Middle, B'sorah) 45:55 [5] 5.5 km (8:21 / km) +130m 7:28 / km
shoes: Salomon speedcross 4

Gauteng Middle champs at B'sorah. Had a solid start and good route to #2 put me in the lead. Things were going well until I was too far north at #5 and lost time there (used the wrong boulder as an attackpoint....) Then leaving #7 my exit angle was wrong, and trying to compensate without properly checking the map saw me into the wrong thicket north of #8. Lost more time there again! Mostly happy with the rest of the run, except my entry and exit angles into and out of controls was pretty terrible... I need to work on that aspect. Not reading ahead well enough! Enjoyed the course though, and really love that bushveld running. 2nd place to Brad again, so happy with that!

Orienteering race (Gauteng Long, B'sorah) 1:49:05 [5] **** 12.4 km (8:48 / km) +250m 7:59 / km
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 305

Gauteng Long Champs at B'sorah. Last time here (and last O event) was in September 2016, when I ran off the map, and the rest is history... Needed to exact some revenge on B'sorah this time around. With my fitness a long way from where it should be, my strategy was to keep it steady, and no red-lining. Fair start to #1, then completely stuffed #2. I wasn't quite into the scale, and got thrown off by another control. Some between-boulder grid-search later, I found it. After that things settled down. I could feel my nav was a bit rusty, so focused extra hard on not stuffing that up (instead of just head down and run hard!), and it seemed to work. Had good runs on the long legs from 14-15, 18-19 and 20-21. Was too low at #24, and lost some time again there. It seems that's where I lost 1st overall too :-( Anyway, in the end very happy with my run! It was tough out there though. Came in 2nd only 59 seconds behind Brad. Awesome map and routes, thanks Nic!
